Over the years, I have come to a quiet but firm conviction: if you cannot explain something so clearly to a person that it feels obvious to him after it is understood, then the failure is not in the listener, but in the explanation. You have not understood it clearly yourself and that is why you suck at teaching. The finest teachers and writers do not leave you feeling you have been handed a new fact; they leave you feeling you have remembered something that you already knew all along implicitly. The insight does not arrive as a stranger—it arrives as a RE-cognition. This is why, centuries ago, Plato insisted that we do not truly learn mathematics; we only recollect it. In Plato’s dialogue Meno, he stages a beautiful demonstration of this. Socrates, (the hero of all of his dialogues), calls over an uneducated slave boy and asks him a seemingly technical question: Given a square of area 1, how would you construct a square of area 2? The slaveboy has no idea obviously. Instead of lecturing the answer, Socrates begins to ask the simplest possible questions to him - questions that the boy can answer from ordinary intuition. Step by step, merely by agreeing or disagreeing with what he already sees in his mind, the boy is led to the required construction himself. He eventually discovers that the new square must be built on the diagonal of the original one. When the realisation dawns, he is stunned ; not because someone told him the answer, but because he sees it was there in his mind all along. His technique broadly is as follows. Look at the diagram below. The red shaded square has side length 1, so area 1. Four such squares make the large black square of side 2, area 4. The thick blue diamond is a square rotated 45°, and its sides are exactly the diagonals of the original red square. Because that blue square covers exactly half the large square (half of four small squares of area 1), its area is 2. The boy in Plato’s story, guided only by gentle questions from Socrates who then arrives at this very figure and sees it for himself: to double the area of a square, he must construct the new square on the diagonal of the old one. That is the magic. No formulas were recited, no theorems quoted ; only a chain of questions so natural and intuitive that the final answer feels inevitable, almost trivial. The student does not feel taught any new knowledge; he feels awakened to the knowledge within him. This, to me, is the highest art of teaching. When someone says after my explanation, “Oh… it was that simple? I feel like I knew it already,” I do not take it as faint praise. I take it as the highest compliment. It means the idea has slipped past the gatekeeper of the conscious mind and settled where it always belonged—as something self-evident within your subconscious mind. That is why I chose differential geometry for my PhD. Geometry is the most Platonic of all subjects: its truths are literally seen - first by the sensible eye and then through the mind’s eye. And ever since I first read the Meno, near the end of my undergraduate years, I have always tried to teach anything the way Socrates did—never to pour knowledge into someone, but to draw it out of themselves, question by question, until the person in front of me realises they have discovered the answer themselves. This in my opinion , this joy of self discovery, is the moment of purest intellectual joy: the sudden recognition that the truth was waiting inside all along.
