The #Sahel branch of the Islamic State (IS-Sahel) has launched a large scale offensive against the #Malian Army and #Russian Africa Corps units in the #Labbezanga and #Tessit regions. According to information from local sources, government forces, fearing an imminent assault were ambushed by militants while attempting to evacuate the military camp in Labbezanga. During this process, heavy gunfire was heard around the city of Menaka, rocket attacks were carried out against military positions and it was reported that militants had surrounded the city.
At the peak of these events, it was confirmed that the city of Menaka briefly fell under the control of IS-Sahel militants. It was reported that militants entered the governor’s building, seized vehicles there and patrolled for a period after establishing checkpoints in the city center. It was noted that during this occupation the group which imposed communication restrictions in the city refrained from sharing propaganda images unlike their rivals JNIM or the FLA. However, this situation did not last long, following intensive airstrikes by the Malian Air Force and Russian Africa Corps units on the outskirts of the city. The clashes shifted to the southern entrance.
Ultimately, as of the evening of April 28 the situation in the region changed hands again. The Russian Africa Corps announced through released video footage that full control of Menaka had been established and that IS-Sahel militants were forced to withdraw from the city. For now, the Malian army and its Russian allies continue to reinforce strategic points such as the former UN camp in the west while tension and uncertainty in the region persist. It remains unclear whether the clashes between the parties have stopped or if the militants are lying in wait for a new attack.
