And, the resignation of one of the finest Iron Bird brains in India -- Shri Sanjay Sharma -- at a critical juncture. This, insiders say, did delay the evaluation activities at Iron Bird facility of ARDC. An ADA top scientist confirm that Shri Sanjay had applied to ADA as well, but the final outcome is not known. Despite all these setbacks, ADA's IFCS Directorate is leaving no stone unturned to complete the entire evaluation at ADE & HAL. It is now certain that two desi primary actuators (L&R) will be integrated on one of the LSP aircraft soon, thereby embedding yet another home-grown product on Tejas. #TMHThread 5/n #Tejas #LCAActuators Those not aware of the developmental process of IFCS hardware and software of Tejas, take note: Any change in the software primarily goes through the regular Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) process, the Software Integration Test (SIT), the Hardware-Software Integration (HSI) tests leading to the critical Iron Bird tests. Once the black box category of tests at Iron Bird test facility are completed, the Test Pilots (TPs) carry out the planned pilot-in-the-loop tests introducing specific failures of the system and covering the flight envelope to check the hardware or the software performance under failure conditions. Subsequently the pilot in the loop fault free test are carried out to check the integrity of the hardware and the software by the TPs. (Contd...)

#TMHThread 4/n #Tejas #LCAActuators As initial estimates indicate, 20 #LCAMk1A aircraft are being equipped with imported primary actuators and HAL is shelling out as much as Rs 100 Crores extra! And why? Why? Why? Another military source say that ADA was asked to take up the integration of desi primary actuators in 2020 and it was ONLY IN May 2024, ADA decided to take up the developmental activity of Digital Flight Control Computer (DFCC) software compatible with indigenous primary actuators with ADE, thus propelling the DALIA dream that started 2 decades ago. #TMHThread 3/n #Tejas #LCAActuators "Initially there was a plan to fit in all 13 indigenous actuators (6 slat actuators, 2 airbrake actuators, 4 elevon actuators and one rudder actuator) on to the first #LCAMk1A aircraft. But somehow the developmental testing, type certification and production flight of primary actuators had taken the backseat though these actuators outperform the Moog actuators on various parameters and the cost of these actuators is almost one fourth as compared to the imported ones," an HAL official at senior management level, now working with company HQ in Bengaluru, confirms. What needs to be investigated is that how ADA and HAL proceeded with the imported primary actuators on #LCAMk1A production aircraft when a better set of homegrown systems were available. At whose behest HAL & ADA folks pushed the videshi product on Tejas need to be investigated. Also what MoD babus, auditors and the so-called custodians of #AtmanirbharBharat were doing? #TMHThread 2/n #Tejas #LCAActuators The primary actuators (the 4 elevons & the rudder) of Tejas are the most critical + expensive components of #FCS and are currently being manufactured by M/s Moog Inc, USA. The indigenisation efforts for primary actuators were bestowed upon to Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram by ADA almost 20 years back under the project #DALIA (Development of Advanced Linear Actuators). The production agencies were also identified to be a consortium of Godrej, Mumbai, MTAR, Hyderabad and HAL, Lucknow Division. The actuators were successfully made ready for testing 10 years back and the flightworthy actuators were delivered to ADA for developmental testing almost 7-8 years back. It is worth pondering and investigating, why these actuators have not been integrated on to Tejas till date and why HAL has gone for imported actuators when the flightworthy indigenous actuator hardware was ready?
