Second, the screenings of a recent popular Bangla movie were cancelled in Tangail's Kalihati after objections from the local clerics and Islamists. Since Aug 2024, such obstruction of arts, culture, literature, and entertainment by Islamists have become commonplace in a supposedly "new" Bangladesh.
Actresses have been forced to cancel public events, books fairs have been attacked, writers have been assaulted, girls' football matches cancelled, seasonal festivals stopped, libraries looted, women harassed in public places for not "covering up properly", restaurants closed down for serving food during daytime during Ramadan, among others.
How did the Yunus Govt react to all these? By looking the other way of course. Why? Because the Islamic extremists and fundamentalists are his biggest support base.

News out of #Bangladesh sound like the #Talibanisation process under #Yunus is reaching its "event horizon" with #Islamists basically doing whatever they want now: 200 year old tree felled by clerics in #Madaripur over anti-#Islamic allegations.
A 200 year old banyan tree on the bank of Kumar River in Madaripur was widely believed to possess “mystical powers" leading people to light candles and make vows at its base. Islamists of course, never approved of the practice. But now, they have the power to enforce Islamic morals under the friendly Yunus Govt.
Throughout yesterday, the tree was felled by local Islamic clerics who wanted to restrain people from engaging in practices that they consider to be 'bid'ah (not compatible with Islamic norms).
No actions have been taken against the offending clerics, either from the police or the civil admin. Not even a statement of condemnation from the otherwise extremely talkative Forests and Environment Adviser of the Interim Govt Syeda Rizwana Hasan.
