The excellent folks at @OurWorldInData have a comprehensive article about Vietnam.
They have a comprehensive #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask strategy, perhaps especially notable for extremely comprehensive contact tracing.
@IrfanDhalla @globeandmail Room for debate, but from a public health messaging POV, I'm inclined to agree with @IrfanDhalla - let's rally the public to aim to get, if not the entire genie back in the bottle, at least his head and thorax in there. Not with a lockdown but smart #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask
This is NOT about a lockdown.
This is about a properly resourced #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask strategy.
The countries that are explicitly or implicitly aiming for elimination (e.g., South Korea, Vietnam, New Zealand, Scotland, Thailand, China, etc.) are among the most open.
@SharkawyMD @AmandaHempelMD @davidcarr333 @TorontoIDDoc @ASPphysician @BogochIsaac @zchagla @jpowi @DrToddLee @janinemccready @DFisman @AshTuite @LapointeShaw Me too. My worry though is that our #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask plan may not be good enough to meet the needs of our reopening. I hope my worry proves to be unnecessary!
Merci @HafezGhanem_WB pour votre leadership et votre plaidoyer pour continuer les efforts de transformation du continent, en dépit de cette crise inédite. L'Afrique s'en sortira ! #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask #INFORAFRICA #StopTheSpread
Great to see steady progress in reducing new cases even during re-opening. 👏👏👏
We have the knowledge and resources to contain Covid-19 and reopen safely.
We are doing well on many elements of #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask, now is the time to shore up any gaps.
Today, Ontario is reporting 130 cases of #COVID19, a 0.4% increase as the province processed over 29,500 tests. With 267 resolved, there are 137 fewer active cases in the province for a total of 1,462 currently active cases in Ontario.
For a while, yes. In the end, I think it becomes clear which places have a sufficiently good #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask implementation and which places do not.
Related to this... When spread varies widely between people, it becomes difficult to distinguish good luck from good containment.
Canadians should pay to attention California.
Our pandemic experiences were similar for a few months. Now California is in trouble.
It’s not fully clear why, but @Bob_Wachter provides some reasons here.

1/ Covid (@UCSF) Chronicles, Day 115
It's been a wild week, with terrible news about new cases, overwhelmed hospitals, and deaths. Plus boatloads of new info on wide-ranging themes. So this’ll be a potpourri thread, covering a few areas that seem most interesting and dynamic.
An ambitious aim, and a clear and adequately resourced #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask strategy will quash this, while also allowing the reopening to continue.
But a muddled approach raises the risk of many preventable deaths and economic stagnation.
1) After being eclipsed by Montreal's soaring rates of #COVID19 infections and deaths for most of the pandemic, Quebec's regions are now reporting a disturbing number of cases. Please click on my column below. https://t.co/eXS6PGngPb

When school resumes in September, teachers will be effectively increasing the size of their social circles by >100x. @PublicHealthON needs to have the #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask infrastructure in place to keep them and their families safe.
So, what should we do?
If we look around the world, we can see that countries like South Korea that aim high, and properly resource a #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask, can contain Covid-19 and open up.
We can do this too in Canada. 🇨🇦
This headline only tells part of the story.
In many places closures have been focused - e.g., 2-3% of schools in South Korea, a handful of businesses in Kingston, etc.
A good #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask strategy obviates the need for regional lockdowns.
One by one, the countries that seemed most on top of the #coronavirus pandemic are re-imposing lockdowns as cases surge, by @jgriffiths https://t.co/ziq3YG87GB via @cnnhealth #Covid19 #GlobalHealth
Well worth reading this interview with @AshTuite.
Still a lot more we could be doing to strengthen #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask.
This will allow us to:
(1) contain Covid-19
and
(2) re-open schools and workplaces
at the same time.
#UofT epidemiologist from @UofT_dlsph shares her take on distancing, testing & tracing key to controlling #COVID19 this fall https://t.co/BYB0EFiDCp
I agree we pretty much always need RCTs for treatments at the individual level. But it isn’t possible (or desirable) to do RCTs of a #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask strategy, and the natural experiment we are living through has shown this prevents >> 90% of cases and deaths.
Smart article by @ChrisWorsham & @AnupamBJena.
The most relevant “natural experiments” have told us that a good #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask strategy prevents >>90% of COVID-19 cases and deaths.
It can be hard for doctors to find the answers they need in this observational data because without randomization, hidden biases can lead to misleading results. https://t.co/0VJmtJug4Z
Glad to see this. #TestTraceIsolateSUPPORTMask

Both of these things are true:
1. We are in a much, much better situation than we were in April
2. We still don’t have a clear objective or a coherent and fully resourced #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask strategy

A closer look at #COVIDー19 daily changes in #Ontario

Also worth watching. A robust #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask approach is allowing Scotland to focus on improving children’s lives.
Scotland developments. 5 new cases today.
-Children under 12 don't need to physically distance from each other while outside (Yes! kids really need to play together)
-Face coverings mandatory in shops & public transport (Yes!)

Worth following this. I believe the Australian state of Victoria had lower incidence before reopening schools than we currently do in Ontario. Speaks to the need for a robust #TestTraceIsolateSupportMask approach so we can reopen schools as safely as possible.
Student-to-student transmission appears to be occurring in schools in Victoria, with the Chief Health Officer describing it as a "worrying trend."
Risk is related to prevalence. If there are sufficient cases in the community, spread will occur in schools.
