We’re delighted to be back in Türkiye for the 22nd #TheBodrumRT organised by @CER_EU & @EdamOrg.

The 22nd edition of #TheBodrumRT takes place at a time when we witness a structural transformation of the international order. Geopolitical competition is intensifying. The boundaries between security and economics are becoming increasingly blurred. Technology is transforming both our security considerations and our societies. Economic interdependence, once seen as a source of prosperity, is increasingly viewed through the prism of security and vulnerability.
The programme of this year's Bodrum Roundtable co-organised by @EdamOrg and @CER_EU reflects these transformations.
We have already had an excellent start to this year’s Bodrum Roundtable with last evening’s keynote address by @MarietjeSchaake. It provided a stimulating opening to our discussions and set the tone for the days ahead.
This morning what we heard from Chief Advisor of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye @cagrierhan was particularly valuable in helping the participants to better understand Turkish perspectives on the rapidly changing international environment.
Deputy Minister of the Turkish MFA @LGUMRUKCU also provided important insights while taking part in the discussion of the first panel that focused on the future of deterrence in Europe amid a wider geopolitical reordering. The United States continues to place greater emphasis on the Indo-Pacific, while expecting Europe to assume greater responsibility for its own security. This raises important questions not only about Europe's defence capabilities, but also about the credibility and adaptability of deterrence itself.
This naturally led to our discussion of European industrial competitiveness and “Made in Europe.” Europe needs to strengthen its industrial and technological base. But the key question is how it can do so without creating new barriers among close partners and allies—including Türkiye.
Our third panel turns to technology and democratic resilience. Artificial intelligence and other emerging and disruptive technologies offer extraordinary opportunities, but they also create new vulnerabilities. The challenge, therefore, is not simply to innovate, but to ensure our societies remain resilient, open, and democratic as technology advances.
Tomorrow, we will turn to the Middle East, a region undergoing profound change whose future is inseparable from Europe's and the Mediterranean's security and prosperity.
There is a common thread running through all these discussions: Security, economic competitiveness, technology, and resilience can no longer be treated as separate policy domains, as has been exemplified by last evening’s keynote speech. They have become interconnected dimensions of power. And some of the buzz words repeated during the discussions are “burden shifting”, “strategic responsibility”, “regional ownership”, “resilience”, “whole-of-society approach”, “inclusivity” and “constructive engagement”.
