Dear Ghana Police Service @GhPoliceService
Please do not rush the implementation of #TraffiTechGH at the expense of public education.
You cannot substitute genuine civic education with influencer marketing. A few social media influencers cannot adequately educate millions of drivers, motorcyclists, commercial transport operators and other road users across Ghana, particularly those in rural communities and areas with limited access to social media.
Ghana has a useful precedent to learn from: the 2007 currency redenomination, when the country transitioned from the old cedi to the Ghana cedi. A major national transition requires deliberate public education, sufficient preparation time and a clear understanding of what is changing.
I therefore urge the Ghana Police Service and the relevant authorities to consider a comprehensive six-month nationwide public awareness campaign before enforcing #TraffiTechGH in full.
The campaign should include:
- Nationwide radio and television education in local languages.
- Community durbars and public sensitisation programmes.
- Engagement with transport unions, driver associations, motorcyclists and commercial vehicle operators.
- Roadside education and demonstrations across all regions, not just Accra.
- Clear explanations of the system, traffic offences, penalties, evidence collection and procedures for challenging errors.
- A reasonable transition period that allows road users to understand the system before full enforcement.
Technology without adequate public education risks creating confusion, mistrust and avoidable hardship. The objective should not simply be to introduce a new traffic enforcement system, but to ensure that ordinary Ghanaians understand it, know their responsibilities and are treated fairly under it.
Ghana Police Service, please take your time to educate the public properly. Do not confuse online visibility with nationwide awareness. Millions of Ghanaians deserve the opportunity to understand this system before they are expected to comply with it.
Educate first. Build public confidence. Then enforce effectively.
