Turkish Maarif Foundation and the Global Attack on Gülen Schools
For nearly a decade, the Turkish government has pursued a campaign of #transnational #repression that reaches far beyond its borders. Schools have become one of its primary targets.
Our new report documents how the Turkish Maarif Foundation (TMV), established just weeks before the 2016 coup attempt, has been used as a state instrument to take over or replace Gülen schools around the world.

The findings are striking.
▶️Since 2016, at least 162 schools in 29 countries have been closed, confiscated or transferred.
▶️131 of them were handed over to TMV, affecting around 7,800 teachers and staff.
▶️In many cases, these actions followed sustained diplomatic pressure and were carried out without transparent legal procedures, effective judicial remedies or compensation for those affected.
Looking at 14 country case studies across Africa, Asia and Latin America, the report shows that these were part of a coordinated international policy of Turkey.
The report also examines these developments through the lens of international criminal law and concludes that there is a reasonable basis to consider whether the documented pattern may amount to the #crime #against #humanity of persecution under Article 7 of the Rome Statute.

West is best. Aaaah, not the way you’re thinking!
Let me explain. As a #transnational family trying to do the dance of living in two geopolitical spaces simultaneously, somehow we’ve found ourselves homes in the western ends of our two cities. In #Montreal we live in the West Island while in #Accra we’re domiciled at West Legon (Westlands).
I arrived home in Accra a couple of days ago to an unusual sight. As I navigated a left turn into our driveway, here were two strangers on the lush green carpet grass right outside the front wall. They seemed nervous on my approach and that piqued my interest further.
Initially, I gave them the I-am-the-Oga-and-this-is-my-house look only to realize these were two harmless young women (one early twenties; the other probably late thirties) only taking turns to snap photos with their mobile phones against the beautiful backdrop of our home.
By now my suspicions and shields were down. They nervously signaled if they had my permission to carry on their initial intentions before I drove in. How could I say no? They giggled gleefully like little girls upon receiving the green light and photoed on. They are probably on TikTok Tok now claiming they live there.
I felt a rush of a cocktail of emotions. Some relief that they weren’t thieves; some contentment that ‘l’m living the life’; a sprinkle of joy that I had made their day; a streak of anger that our society was not more equitable… Most of all, profound sadness that too many of our political class are in #leadership to amass more toys and titles for themselves, family and friends rather than to leverage their powers to make life better for the ordinary Ghanaian.
These two ladies (I should’ve asked for their names to further humanize them; I certainly did not humiliate them) are no lesser persons than we are. The sheer delight that they could pose all they wanted and click away! They know nice things too, desire nice things too and equally deserve nice things too as bonafide citizens of the land. No one, not even the president of the Republic, is more Ghanaian than them. Leadership is about responsibility towards our constituents and service to them; not just influence for its own sake.
Can we do better as family, municipal, district, regional, national and continental African #leaders FOR our people? We hold power in trust for such as these not to extract resources and leave these high and dry. Or these days, flooded and drowning, with our total mismanagement of major parts of our main cities while we vroom away in our Land Cruisers with roaring V8 engines, disco lights and annoying sirens in F minor.
We can do better. Let us!

Today, I will present my study, "Who told you you are lesser: Art-based Critical Ethnography Against Epistemic Erasure," between 1:00 and 3:00 PM in Research Commons (Green A).
Be there if you can 🙏🏿

Finally!👏🏻👏🏻 Resolving at least some of numerous obstacles to the effective use of EU #citizenship rights of #mobile 🇪🇺 citizens is essential for truly keeping the Union a #transnational community of #Europeans vs just an international organisation of #EU27. Bravo, @CY2026EU!🙌🏻
*Writing this one, exceptionally, with my 🇸🇮 & former pro hats.🧢
Moving to another country does not mean losing your democratic rights. New rules strengthen voting and candidacy rights for mobile EU citizens in local elections.

Yesterday, we hosted the second edition of "Press Freedom Talks" moderated by Selçuk Gültaşlı at Press Club Brussels to mark #World #Press #Freedom #Day with a discussion on #journalism in #exile and #transnational #repression.
First of all, big thank you to our speakers Stephen Reimer, Ena Bavčić, Levent Kenez and Ebrahim Mahfoud, who shared their researches, initiatives and deeply personal experiences about what it means to continue journalistic work in exile.
Stephen Reimer spoke about the growing #misuse of #financial #systems and anti-money laundering frameworks against #journalists and dissidents, explaining how banking restrictions, #financial #surveillance and international information-sharing mechanisms can become tools of repression far beyond borders.
Ena Bavčić presented European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF)’s work supporting journalists in exile through monitoring, advocacy, legal and psychological support, security referrals and professional assistance. She underlined the need for stronger protection mechanisms, especially for family members of exiled journalists who often remain exposed to pressure in their home countries.
Levent Kenez shared his own experience as an exiled #Turkish journalist, speaking about threats against his family, #extradition attempts, surveillance, #smear campaigns and online hashtag#censorship. His testimony was a powerful reminder that for many journalists, exile does not end the pressure.
Ebrahim Mahfoud spoke movingly about the struggle of trying to #rebuild a journalistic #career in Europe while constantly having to prove your legitimacy and experience. He also stressed how important exiled journalists are in helping European audiences understand the realities of conflicts and repression in countries like Syria.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this important discussion and to our speakers for their openness, honesty and insights.
