I like to include a visit to the war graves on these trips as it really does highlight how lucky we are, and how we forget the sacrifice of this generation. Most graves are simply marked “a soldier of the Great War” but when marked boys in their teens or 20s that died in what must have been a hellish life for our freedom. How privileged to be on the way back from a brilliant week messing about on the ring with friends, touring alpine passes, meeting up with another for beers and Le Mans Classic. Their visit to Europe was so utterly different. It does put things in perspective.

The largest "Silent City" of them all. In amongst the headstones, the Year 9 students were searching for the fallen soldiers we had given them to find. They found them all and marked their final resting place with a wooden cross and a silent thought. @CWGC #TyneCot #ypres

Net bij #TyneCot geweest, en wow… wat een plek. Het is de grootste militaire begraafplaats van het Gemenebest uit #WOI, met bijna 12.000 graven. Bizar om te zien hoeveel jonge gasten daar liggen, vaak zelfs zonder naam. Je voelt daar echt de triestheid van deze oorlog. We hebben met onze eenheid een krans gelegd, als afsluiter van onze #battleFieldTour. Mooi en eervol moment samen. Deze dagen waren indrukwekkend, vol verhalen en plekken die je niet snel vergeet. Echt iets wat je meegemaakt moet hebben als je iets met geschiedenis van de eerste wereldoorlog hebt of iets over wilt leren.

Today I left a marker for a #6thGloster man whose back story I researched for ⁦@jbanningww1⁩ Arthur Daniell from #Gloucester - a young postie - he was19 when he was killed near #Ypres. His name is on the @CWGC #TyneCot Memorial to the Missing. #WesternFootstepsTour #FWW

Robert Torrance, man of the match in the 1911 FA Cup Final, was killed in 1918. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing in Belgium. #BCAFC #FACup #WW1 #TyneCot

Going along the front line #Somme all day with the many many memorials And these fields tell so many stories - #tynecot and #thiepval below 👇are the largest of these 🌸also included a German memorial Thiepval for me was the one - as fitting as the ground zero in New York 🌸
