**Democrats are projected to take control of both the House and the Senate in the 2026 midterms**, delivering a major rebuke to Republicans and President Trump.
This is being described across outlets as a broad “blue wave” or even a historic rout, with Democrats flipping seats deep into traditionally Republican territory. As of late night November 3 / early November 4 (MST), major networks and papers (BBC, Washington Post, USA Today, NBC, Politico, etc.) have called both chambers for Democrats, though some races are still being counted.
### Senate
Democrats are around **53 seats** (roughly +7 net gain), with Republicans near 41–42. Key flips include:
- **Texas**: James Talarico (D) over Ken Paxton (historic Democratic win).
- **Ohio**: Sherrod Brown (D).
- **Kansas**: Adam Hamilton (D) — first Democratic senator there since 1932.
- **Iowa**, **South Carolina** (Annie Andrews — first Dem since 1998), **Maine** (Troy Jackson over longtime Sen. Susan Collins), and **North Carolina** (Roy Cooper).
A few races (e.g., Michigan) remained uncalled or tight as counting continued.
### House
Democrats have crossed the 218-seat majority threshold (projections in the low-to-mid 220s range so far, with ~25 net gains reported in some trackers). They flipped numerous seats across the map.
### Governors and other notes
Democrats also flipped several governorships, including **Texas** (Gina Hinojosa, the state’s first Latina governor, over Greg Abbott), **Ohio** (Amy Acton over Vivek Ramaswamy), Georgia, and Iowa.
Reporting attributes the results largely to voter frustration over high prices/cost of living and the war in Iran, framed as a referendum on Trump’s agenda. Trump has said he accepts the results, noted that Democrats “did a good job,” and has pointed to the Iran war, fuel prices, and the fact that he himself was not on the ballot as factors. He has also signaled he plans to rely on the veto power for the remainder of his term.
Results are still fluid in a handful of races, but the overall outcome for control of Congress is widely reported as settled. This sets up a Democratic Congress for the final two years of Trump’s presidency, with the ability to block legislation and pursue oversight.
