1. The US-Pak relationship has been a rollercoaster. From GWOT allies to near-pariah status, Pakistan’s ties with Washington soured over the past 15 years. Yet, suddenly, Gen. Michael Kurilla calls Pak a “phenomenal partner” in counter-terrorism, and Munir gets a red-carpet invite. Why now? 🤔
2. Timing is key. Israel’s recent strikes on Iran, with tensions over Tehran’s nuclear program escalating, have the Middle East on edge. The US is pushing diplomacy with Iran but also bracing for conflict. Posts on X suggest the US might be eyeing Pakistan as a strategic asset against Iran.
3. Historically, Pakistan’s support for the US in the Global War on Terror (GWOT) came at a cost. The Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) emerged as a backlash, targeting Pak for siding with the US against fellow Muslims. TTP’s attacks destabilized Pak for years. Could history repeat itself?
4. Israel hitting Iran puts Pak in a tricky spot. Israel wouldn’t directly ask Pak for support—too much bad blood. But the US could nudge Pak to play a role, maybe covertly, like providing airspace or intel. X users speculate Pak’s military might be tempted by US $$$ or arms deals.
5. Pak’s public stance is pro-Palestine, anti-Israel. Supporting Israel, even indirectly, would be political suicide for Munir’s regime. But neutrality in an Israel-Iran conflict could also draw ire from Iran, Pak’s neighbor and a Shia powerhouse. So, what’s the risk?
6. A Shia-based TTP equivalent? Possible but unlikely. Pak’s Shia minority (15-20%) has faced sectarian violence, often from Sunni militant groups. Iran could stoke unrest by backing Shia militias if Pak leans too far toward the US/Israel. But Iran’s already stretched thin—Gaza, Hezbollah, Syria.
7. TTP itself is resurgent, allegedly using Afghan soil to hit Pak. If Pak gets dragged into the US-Israel-Iran mess, TTP could exploit the chaos, framing Munir as a US stooge. This could rally Sunni extremists, not Shias, to intensify attacks. Pak’s internal security is already fragile.
8. Munir’s visit to Tehran with PM Shehbaz Sharif (May 27) shows Pak’s balancing act. They discussed “Muslim unity” with Ayatollah Khamenei, signaling no overt anti-Iran tilt. But US pressure could force Pak’s hand. Will Munir risk alienating Iran for US favor?
9. The US motive seems clear: counter Iran, secure Pak’s cooperation, and maybe pull Pak away from China’s orbit. But Pak’s military has burned its fingers before. Supporting the US could inflame domestic unrest, revive TTP, or worse, spark sectarian chaos.
10. Our take: Pak will likely stay neutral publicly, avoid direct involvement, and play both sides for max leverage. But if pushed, covert US alignment could backfire.
