BIG INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATE:
Uttan–Virar Sea Link gets in-principle nod for Delhi–Mumbai Expressway connectivity.
A major milestone that will reshape Mumbai Metropolitan Region's infrastructure journey.
The Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has granted the MMRDA an in-principle approval to connect the proposed 55.12 km Uttan–Virar Sea Link (UVSL) with the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway via Khardi near Virar.
The approval strengthens the strategic role of the Mumbai–Vadhavan Expressway Corridor (MVEC) by extending its connectivity to India's national expressway network.
Together with the Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway and the JNPT–Vadhavan Port Link, the MVEC will form a 120-km, fully access-controlled coastal corridor
that will enable uninterrupted, fully access-controlled connectivity from South Mumbai with Vasai, Virar, Palghar, and Vadhavan Port while integrating with national expressways.
The Government of Maharashtra has cleared the UVSL, and approved its extension to Vadhavan Port, one of India’s most important deep-sea ports.
At the heart of this transformative project is the proposed Uttan–Virar Sea Link, comprising a 24.35 km main bridge—set to be India's longest sea bridge—and 30.77 km of high-speed connectors. Designed with six traffic lanes, emergency lanes, navigational spans and a fully integrated Intelligent Transport System (ITS), it is being built for faster, safer and smarter mobility.
The project is expected to ease congestion, reduce travel times and emissions, improve passenger and freight movement, and accelerate trade, logistics, industrial development, tourism, housing and employment across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
With Vadhavan Port connectivity already proposed, the latest in-principle nod marks another significant milestone in creating one of India's most strategic coastal transport corridors—bringing South Mumbai, Vasai, Virar, Palghar and the nation's expressway network closer than ever before.
