If Alberta oil gives Canada leverage over the world’s largest economy, consider the leverage it will give Alberta in negotiations with Canada.
Ontario, Quebec and B.C. depend on Alberta energy to drive cars and trucks, fly aircraft, heat homes and businesses, and operate their industries.
They also depend heavily on continued access to the U.S. market.
Alberta is in a very different position: our principal customer is already the United States, not the other provinces.
The leverage Canada now sees in Alberta’s resources will be even more powerful in Alberta’s own hands.
Canada is in a recession. Alberta is not.
Maybe the real risk is staying in Canada.
