On this #WASHWednesday, I am pleased to share a new op-ed co-authored with John Oldfield, Founder & CEO of Accelerate Global and former Managing Principal of Global Water 2020, titled A Quiet Revolution in Care: WASH as the Foundation of Health System Quality.
A simple way to judge whether a health system can deliver safe and dignified care is seen in the physical conditions of care itself. Is clean water available at the point of care? Can a midwife reliably wash her hands between deliveries? Are sanitation and hygiene services dependable enough for infection prevention to be routine?
Global monitoring has brought these conditions into sharper focus. @WHO โ @UNICEF data show that as recently as 2019, more than one-quarter of healthcare facilities worldwide lacked basic water services, over one-fifth lacked sanitation, and more than one-third had no soap or alcohol-based hand hygiene at points of care, affecting an estimated 17 million births each year. In Nigeria, earlier facility-level assessments found that only around 22 per cent of hospitals had reliable access to clean water at the time of measurement, with sanitation and hygiene gaps continuing to affect the quality of care.
These gaps sit within a broader framework of rights and responsibilities, recognised through the @UN General Assembly Resolutions A/RES/64/292 (2010) and A/RES/70/169 (2015), and operationalised within the health sector through World Health Assembly Resolution WHA72.27 (2019), with further reinforcement by the UN General Assembly in 2023.
Through the @WellbeingAfrica Foundationโs @DettolNigeria Hygiene Quest Programme, implemented with our social impact partners @ThisIsReckitt and aligned with national strategies, hygiene practice has been strengthened across schools, communities, and health care facilities. Between 2022 and 2025, the programme reached more than 282,000 students, engaged over 113,000 pregnant and lactating women, and supported infection prevention and surface hygiene training for more than 5,000 health workers.

On this #WASHWednesday as we commemorate World Toilet Day, the theme Sanitation in a Changing World, highlights a universal truth that however our world shifts, society will always need the toilet and will always depend on safe sanitation to prevent disease, protect water resources and sustain human dignity and environmental wellbeing.
Global data shows that 3.4 billion people still lack safely managed sanitation, with 354 million practising open defecation and around 1,000 children under five dying each day from preventable WASH-related diseases. Climate pressures are worsening these risks as floods contaminate latrines and sewerage systems, drought limits water for hygiene, and rising seas erode coastal sanitation infrastructure. At the current rate of improvement, 3 billion people will remain without safe toilets by 2030, and achieving SDG 6.2 will require global progress to increase sixfold and eighteenfold in low-income contexts.
At the @WellbeingAfrica Foundation, sanitation is embedded as a foundational determinant of maternal, newborn and child health. Our WBFA @DettolNigeria Hygiene Quest Programme, supported by our social impact partners @ThisIsReckitt, and our midwifery and nurse led service delivery, strengthens infection prevention and control, toilet safety, waste management and hygiene behaviour change in clinics, schools, households and communities, while global advocacy partnerships reinforce climate-resilient and safely managed sanitation across frontline systems.
A future-ready sanitation landscape must ensure universal accessibility, resilience to floods and droughts, sustained financing, strong operations and maintenance and low-emission technologies that protect both people and the environment. We at #WBFA know that we will always need the toilet, and the priority now is to continue to scale sanitation systems so that every community can depend on safe, reliable and accountable services.

On this #WASHWednesday, I am analysing and reviewing the @WHO @UNICEF joint report, Universal Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, Waste, and Electricity Services in All Health Care Facilities to Achieve Quality Care, which provides a critical framework for addressing these essential services when delivering safe, high-quality health care, central to advancing global health equity, as the @WellbeingAfrica Foundation @DettolNigeria Hygiene Quest Program and Curricula, supported by social impact partners @ThisisReckitt, focuses on the forthcoming year of frontline programming.
The report highlights the urgency of action, revealing that one in five healthcare facilities globally lacks basic water services, affecting an estimated 1.7 billion individuals. Over half of all facilities are without basic hygiene services, and nearly 1 billion people are served by facilities with unreliable or non-existent electricity. These deficiencies have profound implications, particularly in low-resource settings, where they contribute to preventable health outcomes, including nearly half of global newborn deaths. Addressing these service gaps is vital to reducing mortality, preventing infections, and ensuring equitable access to care.
The Wellbeing Foundation Africa and Dettol Nigeria Hygiene Quest Program promote hygiene education and enhance WASH infrastructure in schools, healthcare facilities and communities, aligned with the evidence-based and operational recommendations outlined in the World Health Organization/United Nations Childrenโs Fund Global Framework for Action 2024โ2030, furthering the mission to advance political commitment, scale investments, integrate WASH and energy systems into healthcare, build workforce capacity, and ensure inclusive, equitable, and sustainable services that address the needs of women, children, people with disabilities, and marginalised populations.
Collective and coordinated action is fundamental to equipping all healthcare facilities with safe, reliable, and inclusive care. By advancing WASH infrastructure through #WBFADHQ and #CleanNaija, we can transform health outcomes and build resilience across generations, providing #WellbeingForAll.
Preventing the spread of germs requires a combination of essential hygiene and safety practices that work hand-in-hand to protect our health and well-being.

As I mark #WASHWednesday this week, I am delighted that the @WellbeingAfrica Foundation is embracing a network building approach to enable local program stakeholders to drive locally led development.ย
Last week the Welbeing Foundation Africa, as leading facilitators and advocates of Clean Water and Sanitation Hygiene #WASH and the #CleanNaija Initiative, held its stakeholder engagement meetings for the #WBFA @DettolNigeria Hygiene Quest Programme in 3 of our implementing states.
Convening and converging representatives from various sectors, including the Federal Ministry of Health @FMOH_Nigeria, the National Population Commission @natpopcom, the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, the Universal Basic Education Commission, the News Agency of Nigeria @NGNewsAgency, and @UNESCO, along with local government and community leaders, and officials from primary healthcare centres and schools, these collaborations were an opportunity to continue to enable grassroots development, define policy tracks, increase WASH visibility and amplify health, while sharing updates on the programโs progress, discuss its impact as it scales, share evidence-based learnings and gather insight from key partners committed to promoting and engraining WASH with WBFA.
With over 43,000 mothers, 74,000 students and 22,000 community members reached through programming to date and 671 healthcare workers #TeachClean Trained @LSHTM, WBFA recognises and emphasises safe water, sanitation and hygiene as essential not only for public health but as a catalyst for developing a more resilient, peaceful, and prosperous nation based in #WellbeingForAll.ย
The #WBFADHQ social impact partnership with longstanding and trusted global hygiene leaders @ThisIsReckitt, educates and enhances adherence to proper hygiene practices, in efforts to reduce infection and preventable diseases among school students, mothers and healthcare workers in healthcare facilities, and community members across Abuja, Lagos, and Kwara State, with an emphasis on widespread and intergenerational behavioural change, especially within the intersection of Maternal, Newborn and Child Health #MNCH.
