The 3rd World Local Production Forum (#WLPF) wraps up today (9 April) in Abu Dhabi, with plenty of insights and takeaways to reflect on. In the lead-up to the Forum, on 6 April, @AfricaCDC & @IAVI convened an event on a sustainable supply and demand ecosystem for monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in Africa.
Our NCDA Consultant, Rosalind Turkie, spoke at the event about key challenges and opportunities in accessing NCD medicines—including monoclonal antibodies (mAbs)—in low- and middle-income countries around the world. According to her, while the policy architecture for improved access is in place, implementation remains a challenge.
She highlighted a recently published NCDA advocacy brief with 5 recommendations for countries to accelerate action on their commitments on access to NCD medicines. NCDA calls on governements to:
✅promote tech transfer and expand voluntary licensing agreements to increase the production NCD medicines, including mAbs and biosimilars;
✅ensure affordability through national pricing policies, pricing transparency, and support for local production;
✅align NCD medicines policies with national health benefit packages;
✅Harmonise regulatory processes to accelerate approval and expand WHO prequalification for NCD medicines and diagnostics;
✅strengthen forecasting, supply chain management and resilience and enhance regional and national procurement of NCD medicines and technologies.
The upcoming UN High-Level Meeting (#HLM4) on NCDs & #MentalHealth is an important opportunity to take the #LeadOnNCDs and make progress. NCDA would like the Political Declaration to:
📢 call for increased sustainable financing for NCDs;
💊ensure that good quality and effective treatments, including mAbs, are available accessible and affordable through #UHC;
✔️ and ensure that countries are held accountable for making progress toward these goals.
