Reminder: @icbc has been running these #KnowYourPartBC and #WalkSafeBC pedestrian responsibility campaigns since 2013. In that time, the number of car/pedestrian crashes have INCREASED steadily year over year. Maybe it’s time to revisit the approach, try something else.

Here’s what @icbc is working on this year. Again. Some questions we should be asking: is ICBC handing out reflectors/vests to drivers for the walk to/from their vehicles? What percentage of ICBC community $$$ goes to redesigning roads/crossings, better lighting, etc? #walksafeBC

@Burgundavia @icbc I’ll be following this as ICBC ramps up its annual pedestrian responsibility campaigns again. It’s been quite a few years of #walksafeBC so we should have some good numbers on year-over-year injuries and fatalities by now.
The same “Be Safe Be Seen” pedestrian “awareness” campaigns that will ramp up again in November are literally the single biggest barrier to achieving real, actual road safety in our school zones and throughout #northvan. #walksafeBC #DemandMore
This response is the result of the traditional “Be Safe Be Seen” approach to pedestrian safety continuously pushed by police, media, and well-meaning road safety agencies. Onus for safety is shifted to people on foot so nothing gets done about the root problem - road design.
