While conversations often focus on supervisors or mentors, most respondents to our #WhoGivesSupport survey were actually helping peers at the same career stage or someone who they had no official responsibility towards https://t.co/wNI8Qr4spB

55% of people supporting researchers struggling with their mental health do not feel valued by their institutions for the help they provided, according to the results of our international survey https://t.co/wNI8Qr4spB #WhoGivesSupport

Despite these challenges, only 3.5% agreed strongly that their institutions valued or supported them in their helping role, while 55% disagreed.
"They love and need us to do it but don't support it," said one university lecturer.

Early-career group leaders also emerged as a group with specific needs: they were more likely to find that their supporting experience impacted their work, for instance.

Women reported facing additional challenges: compared to men, they were more likely to report that being a supporter was draining, time-consuming, and impacted their work and their personal lives.

Supporters frequently reported the experience of helping someone as positive but they also faced challenges. 76% said that they felt their role was emotionally draining or stressful.

Overall, 60% of supporters reported struggling with their own mental health when they were providing support; this a number varied by career stage, from high as 84% for PhD students to almost 25% in late-career group leaders.

I'm only highlighting a few findings, more in the report! π AND we've definitely not taken full advantage of the dataset (thank you everyone who filled in the surveyπ)
That's why we've published our code and redacted dataset: https://t.co/hdtzMRnes1
