#WIal| Continuing the discussion on strengthening the education sector, Dr Maphutha from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) delivered a presentation outlining the Department’s role in shaping national policies on teacher development and advancing WIL.
His presentation highlighted key policy recommendations aimed at strengthening the preparation of future educators and ensuring closer alignment between teacher training and the needs of the schooling system. Dr Maphutha outlined the two primary pathways to entering the teaching profession: completing a four-year Bachelor of Education degree, or obtaining a general bachelor’s degree followed by a postgraduate teaching qualification.
He further noted that admission into teacher education programmes requires a National Senior Certificate, and that student teachers may specialise in different teaching phases, including the foundation, intermediate, or senior and further education and training phases.

Ms Weston noted that inequalities present in society can sometimes be reflected in schools, and emphasised that the DBE has implemented a range of forward-looking policies and targeted initiatives aimed at addressing these challenges.
She underscored that transforming the education landscape is a long-term journey, one that requires sustained collaboration, strategic investment and continued innovation. Through focused resource allocation and dedicated programmes that empower teachers, the Department remains committed to building a more inclusive and equitable education system that enables every learner to thrive.
