I connected to the VK3DPW RMS in Australia on 30m using #VARA HF to get a Winlink “check-in” message away for our weekly net. I couldn’t turn it down to a QRP 5W level, but the 25W I used works out to 1.9 mW / km. Not too shabby! #Canada #Australia #AmateurRadio #WinlinkExpress

This past week has been spent figuring out various modes of #WinlinkExpress with fellow op #K5SDW @ScottDWallace, including #VARAhf, #VARAfm, & #VARAchat. Incredible technology, especially the P2P capability. If you'd like to work with us, or have a group we can join. Let us know

Early this am, I connected to the VA7EDG RMS in Edgewood BC on 80m with VARA HF. It was tough going, but I later connected to VK3DPW in Australia on 40m. The #CME made things difficult, but there is always some propagation. #WinlinkExpress #RMS #VARAHF #AmateurRadio

Congratulations to Salt Spring Island Fire Rescue for integrating Amateur Radio in their emergency planning. These radios will be a huge asset, allowing them to communicate with Salt Spring Island hams during disasters. #AmateurRadio #TMD710G #EOC #EMBC #APRS #WinlinkExpress

Two TM-D710G transceivers ready to go for amateur radio operators who are with Salt Spring Island Fire Rescue. They will provide voice communications, APRS and messaging with Winlink Express. One will be on a fire truck & the other will live at Hall #1. #HamRadio @SaltSpringFire

This just goes to show how versatile Winlink Express is. Winlink mode works just fine with your local VHF RMS and with distant ones on HF, but even if all of the RMS stations disappear, you can still connect to one that is in P2P mode. #AmateurRadio #WinlinkExpress #P2P #EmmComms

Last Sunday evening, I gave it a try. I composed a message to K7UNI in P2P format, went to K7UNI's 80m frequency and connected on the first try. I couldn't connect on 40m, probably due to QRM. The next day during the daytime, 40m was just fine. #WinlinkExpress #VARA #HF #P2P #HAM

While I had transitioned from P2P to Winlink mode after our club installed the VHF RMS station VE7SPR-10, P2P is always an option. Last week, I happened to notice the sign-on message for K7UNI indicated that it changed over to P2P from 5-7pm Sunday evenings. #WinlinkExpress #P2P

I've been using Winlink Express for perhaps 10 years, starting on VHF packet with a KPC3+ TNC. Early in 2019, I was also using an FT-817 & a SignaLink USB with ARDOP on HF. It got a lot easier when I added a CAT cable! A few months later, I was using VARA. #WinlinkExpress #HF

VARA HF has been a big success for Winlink Express. I tried VARA FM for the first time yesterday with Devan VE7LSE. 6M worked out well for us. The FT-991A makes it so easy and it is FAST! The largest attachment so far is 140 KB. #VARAHF #VARAFM #WinlinkExpress #6M #FT991A

The FT-817 & SignaLink worked great for JS8 and for VARA in Winlink Express, but the Yaesu FT-991A is a nice radio for these modes too. It allows for CAT control and use of the internal sound card with a single USB cable. #FT991A #JS8Call #WinlinkExpress #VARA #RMS #AmateurRadio

After a few weeks of successful #ARDOP use in Winlink Express, I changed over to #VARA, mostly on 80M with a dipole up just 10 ft - very NVIS! It has been even more successful with better data throughout. This has all been QRP at 5W. #FT817 #WinlinkExpress #RMS #CMS #HF #EmComms

WinLink Express is important for messaging during times of emergency. We’ve been using VHF packet for years, but are now experimenting on HF using ARDOP on 80, 40 and 30M to connect to distant RMS gateways using an FT-817 running 5W. #WinlinkExpress #RMS #EmComms #ARDOP #QRP #HF
