#OctoPhage / #WorldPhageDay / #WorldPhageWeek 2026 Spotlight - Dr. Lillian Musila, Principal Research Scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), associated with U.S. Army Medical Research Directorate-Africa / WRAIR-Africa work.
- After documenting high antimicrobial resistance (AMR) rates across Kenya, she launched systematic phage hunting around 2016. Her team has isolated 150+ phages active against ESKAPE pathogens (including Klebsiella, Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, and others) from local sources such as sewage, rivers, wastewater, and other environmental samples.
- The focus is on therapeutic potential against multidrug-resistant clinical strains in a high-burden setting - true local solutions for local pathogens.
This is a standout example of building collaborative capacity, and local leadership in African phage research.

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, A HUMAN RECEIVES AN AI-DESIGNED VIRUS.
San Francisco startup Radical Numerics says it administered a cocktail of bacteriophages generated by its Omnii-1 model to a patient under compassionate use.

Terrific example of the actual and potential power of bacteriophage. Greetings from #AgeofthePhage - #WorldPhageWeek

I had a nice farewell lunch with Heather Hendrickson’s research lab today at the University of Canterbury. I am grateful for everyone’s hospitality, kindness, and help during my Erskine Fellowship adventure in Ōtautahi Christchurch NZ. Note phabulous phage earrings!

This #WorldPhageWeek, we are proud to spotlight our incubated startup, #AstraphageInnovationsPvtLtd, harnessing the power of bacteriophages to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Another happy phage therapy patient - and a first in India. Another reason to join in the promotion and celebration of the potential of phage during the 8th #WorldPhageWeek 22-28 October!
A 72 year old man in Guntur got a knee replacement in June 2025. Within a month, the artificial joint was infected by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium resistant to a wide range of antibiotics, including carbapenems.
Months of washouts, a spacer exchange, an arthroscopy and weeks of intravenous antibiotics followed. By Dec, his pain was 9/10. The infection kept returning. Doctors judged further surgery unsuitable given his age and condition.
The team then tried bacteriophages: viruses that infect specific bacteria.
For those interested in the science, this is where the work gets interesting....
Dr Sutharsan Govindarajan's phage lab at SRM University-AP tested the patient's own bacterial isolate against a panel of phages. 3 were selected and genome-sequenced.
In lab tests, each phage alone initially killed bacteria, but this strain subsequently regrew. The 3 phage cocktail suppressed that regrowth.
The cocktail was delivered into the infected knee through a drainage tube over 10 days. The antibiotic colistin was given alongside from day 2. Lab tests had shown that the combination worked better against this strain than either treatment alone.
- On day 6, colistin was stopped after kidney function worsened. The phage treatment continued.
- By day 10, tests of the joint fluid no longer detected the resistant bacterium. Pain had fallen from 9 to 2-3, and the man could walk independently again. His inflammation marker returned to normal a few days after treatment ended.
- At 6 months, he remained antibiotic-free with no recurrence reported. A joint-fluid culture in June 2026 showed no growth of the pathogen.
The clinical team was led by Dr Kalyan Chakravarthy Koganti at Samishta Hospital (SHRI), Guntur. The authors describe this as, to their knowledge, India's 1st reported successful phage treatment of a carbapenem-resistant prosthetic joint infection.
Bharat is rising. 🙏🙏

As the 8th #WorldPhageWeek approaches, we hope there will be ongoing support from @GoogleDeepMind for the global development of #Bacteriophage potential against #AMR.
At @GoogleDeepMind, we believe one of AI's most transformative impacts is empowering scientists to solve society's hardest problems.
Over the past year, we've evolved our coding agent, @Google @Antigravity, to accelerate end-to-end scientific workflows combining our latest Gemini models with science-specific:
• breakthrough models like AlphaFold and AlphaGenome
• new interfaces like the Biomolecular Structure Viewer
The impact of this integration has been transformative for the pace of our research. As an example, in a single session using Antigravity, our researchers working on antimicrobial resistance surfaced a novel antimicrobial peptide candidate.
To support academic researchers leverage these tools, we've launched an Antigravity for Science credits program and are looking forward to what this enables:
