It’s now official that 2 coffees specials are growing indgeginously in #Zoka forest. #ExcelsaLiberica has been developed by @narouganda to a commercially productive level.
It makes sense for the coffee to named #ZokaCoffee and we appreciate the efforts of @FriendsofZoka in this advocacy
We need to start a Hash Tag and push it.
We need to credit the source and the resilience of the locals who has valued preservation of the forest habitat over the years and some like @FriendsofZoka and it’s leadership like @Opiaiya @AmanzWillieONE
Beyond naming the propagated coffee should be promoted as a cash crop in #NorthernUganda and this is where Hon @KennethOmona could play a pivotal role.
According to the map am sharing below there is no doubt that #WestNile and #NorthernUganda is arable and conducive for Coffee growing. We also have a lot of unutilized land.
It’s time to reverse the colonial wrong that zoned the region for seasonal cash crops for I underrated reasons to keep the people they perceived as “resistant” poor and tilling the land.
We need also have to organize the farmers in productive formations for mutual support and agribusiness services
Later we need to go full circle with value addition for deep benefit

For the past 2 years we have been unveiling the hidden treasures of #WestNile. #Zoka forest the home of 2 indigenous coffee growing wildly in the forest is just one of the wonders.
Ethiopia has trended as the home of coffee but now we know coffee has always grown nationally in Uganda.
Our challenge is just the coffee drinking culture.
Well Zoka has several wonders and we have worked with @MikeSsebalu @DragoEbra @ubctvuganda to get stories out.

Uganda has always been about Arabica and Robusta, but the game is changing.
Deep in the Zoka Central Forest Reserve, this has bee found, a third player:
"Excelsa"

This isn’t just another coffee variety; it’s a powerhouse. Currently under research by NARO @narouganda kamenyamigo in partnership with Makerere University (@MakCAES), UWA (@ugwildlife), and Kyagalanyi Coffee, this indigenous species is the future.
Why the hype?
Climate Proof: It’s incredibly hardy and handles heat better than its cousins.
Non-stop Harvests: It fruits all year round, providing a steady stream of income.
The Numbers: One tree can yield about 10 kg per year. At 225 trees per acre, we’re looking at 2,250 kg annually. That’s a massive economic shift for our farmers.

We are glad that the #WildCoffee in #Zoka forest is gaining attention.
Zoka doesn’t only have Coffea #Liberica (excelsa) but also Wild Robusta (Coffea #Canephora)
Personally I have tried to domesticate some of the Zoka coffee species from wildlings and many people in #adjumani have done so. In Adjumani we learnt @narouganda has been researching and we hope Adjumani will have priority for the research outcome.
We know the wild robusta has provided genetic resources to strengthen our Rubusta coffee already benefits not yet well shared with the source community.
Now this means we should all get interested in protecting Zoka forest in order to protect the various biodiversity it provides.
Imagine Uganda is now the leading coffee exporter and if we add excelsa that has good market we would even go further.
In Zoka also there are flying squirrels with big tourist potential. Flying squirrels 🐿️ could create attention like the #guerrillas and #Shoebill. Canopy walks, bird watching and botanical tourism are all opportunities in Zoka.
Zoka also is a water catchment for Adjumani and neighboring Acholi. Inside is Zoka river that feeds the nile and fertility to its flood plains.
Zoka is also three in one forest having rain forest, woodland and Savana forest all standing next it each other.
Such a rich, diverse and ecologically important forest needs our joint protection and preservation. It’s even further believed to be a breeding ground for Nsene.

EXCELSA — Uganda’s Wild Coffee
Uganda has long relied on two coffee species: Arabica & Robusta.
But from the Zoka Central Forest Reserve comes a third, Excelsa.
Now under research at the NARO Kamenyamigo Sub-station in partnership with Makerere University @MakCAES, @ugwildlife & @kyagalanyicoffe this indigenous coffee could reshape the future of production.

Westnile has unique tourist potential; Albert Nile for marine tourism, several game reserves (Dufile, East Madi, Lomunga & Ajai), forests like #Zoka mountains like #Otce, religious like Lodonga Basilica, historical & colonial like the Nubian, US President Roosevelt, British Premier Churchill, Emin Pasha, Belgian Congo & Orange free state story and trail.
