The monument at Kisiizi Falls, located in Rukungiri District, is a represents the transformation of the site from a place associated with tragedy to one of healing, hope, and restoration. Historically, Kisiizi Falls carries a painful cultural memory. In earlier times, local tradition held that young unmarried girls who became pregnant were subjected to punishment by being thrown over the falls. This practice made the site deeply associated with fear, loss, and sorrow within the community. Over time, the falls became a symbol of a harsh justice system rooted in cultural beliefs of that period. However, the meaning of the site changed significantly with the arrival of Christian missionaries and the establishment of Kisiizi Hospital in 1958. The hospital introduced a new era of compassion, medical care, and community support. Instead of punishment, the focus shifted to healing, protection of life, and restoring dignity especially for women and children. The monument at Kisiizi Falls was created to reflect this transformation. It tells the story of moving from darkness to light, symbolizing how communities can change from harmful practices to systems of care and understanding. It also represents forgiveness, healing, and the value of human life. #tribe56
