AMERICA'S BIGGEST TECH COMPANIES ARE HIDING BILLIONS IN DEBT. A Nikkei study found this hidden debt grew 8x in just four years, and it's now bigger than these companies' actual, visible debt of $1.35 trillion combined, totaling $1.65 trillion. Meta alone carries $420 billion in hidden debt, nearly triple what's on its official books. Oracle's hidden debt hit $273 billion, a 30x jump in four years, tied to its Stargate data center project with OpenAI. When a company signs a long-term lease for a data center that isn't built yet, or orders GPUs that haven't been delivered, accounting rules let them leave that off the balance sheet entirely. It's fully legal. It's just invisible to anyone only checking the headline debt number. This debt is also increasingly funded by outside investors, not just the companies themselves. Meta brought in Blue Owl Capital as a partner on a Louisiana data center, taking only a 20% stake while guaranteeing outside investors against losses if the project gets scrapped. The Bank for International Settlements has a name for this exact pattern: "shadow borrowing," funding massive expansion without it ever touching the company's own balance sheet.
