This #FrontlineFriday, I welcome the successful conclusion of our Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine & Wellbeing Foundation Africa Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills #AOSS training at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, alongside the concluded training at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, both part of an ongoing effort under the Global Health Workforce Programme #GHWP to equip Nigeria’s maternal health workforce with life-saving clinical skills.
Funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care @DHSCgovUK and managed by Global Health Partnerships (formerly THET), the programme is delivered by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine @LSTMNews @LSTMNigeria, with the @WellbeingAfrica Foundation proud to support its impactful implementation.
Through intensive, hands-on sessions, resident doctors in Gombe and Port Harcourt strengthened core competencies in perioperative care, blood transfusion safety, assisted vaginal delivery techniques (including use of the ventouse), and the @WHO Safe Surgery Checklist. Simulation-based learning and direct mentorship ensured participants were able to apply their knowledge in realistic emergency scenarios, boosting both clinical confidence and patient safety.
I also extend my sincere appreciation to Dr. Bukar Yakubu Lakube and the leadership of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, and the leadership of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, for their collaboration and commitment to excellence in care.

The second day of the Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills (#AOSS) training at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, continued with a strong focus on building essential clinical skills for maternal and newborn care.
Resident doctors took part in practical breakout sessions covering key areas such as perioperative care, vaginal breech delivery, safe blood transfusion practices, and the use of the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist (#SSCL). These sessions combined theory with hands-on learning to strengthen participants’ readiness for real-life emergency scenarios.
A session on assisted vaginal delivery introduced participants to techniques like the use of the ventouse (vacuum extractor), with trainers emphasizing posture, control, and safety to ensure positive outcomes for both mother and baby.
Using mannequins and simulations, participants were able to apply what they learned in a realistic and supportive environment.

In our shared goal of achieving safer births and stronger health systems, the Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills (#AOSS) training has now extended to Gombe State, where 33 resident doctors in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from institutions affiliated with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (#NPMCN) are undergoing hands-on surgical training at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
Led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), with support from the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), this training is part of the costed extension of the Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP) - titled “Improving the Availability and Quality of Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care at National and Sub-National Hospitals by Strengthening the Capacity of NPMCN”.
Building on the success of the initial GHWP Local Grant 130 phase, the programme has so far trained over 230 resident doctors and examiners across Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, and Kano, with many now serving as certified trainers. The Gombe session, alongside Port Harcourt, brings full national coverage across all six geopolitical zones, reinforcing a commitment to equity in health access and quality care.
Quality assurance during this session is being overseen by a college examiner trained by LSTM, maintaining the programme’s commitment to high training standards and consistency.
By equipping doctors with these skills, this programme empowers Nigeria’s health workforce to respond more effectively to maternal and neonatal emergencies.

Today’s Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills (#AOSS) training for resident doctors focused on critical competencies in maternal care, covering key topics such as Vaginal Breech Birth, Basic Airway Skills, Safe Blood Transfusion, and the World Health Organization’s Safe Surgery Checklist (#WHO #SSCL).
Participants engaged in interactive breakout sessions comprising both theoretical instruction and hands-on practical training, utilizing mannequins and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (#OSCE) method to reinforce clinical proficiency through experiential learning.
A dedicated session on Assisted Vaginal Delivery (#AVD) emphasized the safe and effective use of the ventouse (vacuum extractor). Trainers provided a step-by-step demonstration, underscoring the importance of a steady and well-balanced posture to ensure practitioner control and safeguard maternal and neonatal outcomes during the procedure.
This immersive, skills-based approach reflects the program’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce in managing complex obstetric scenarios, ultimately contributing to the reduction of maternal and neonatal complications.

As we continue to advance healthcare outcomes and strengthen medical capacity in Nigeria, we are proud to announce the commencement of the Advanced Obstetrics and Surgical Skills (#AOSS) training program for 32 residents doctors in obstetrics and gynaecology from training institutions affiliated with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (#NPMCN) at the University of Portharcourt Teaching Hospital in Portharcourt. This milestone marks a continuation of our unwavering commitment to strengthening maternal and newborn health services through capacity-building and skills enhancement.
This phase of the training follows the successful implementation of the Global Health Workforce Program (GHWP) Local Grant 130 project, titled “Improving the Availability and Quality of Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care at National and Sub-National Hospitals by Strengthening the Capacity of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).” Led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and supported by the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, the programme has already trained 82 Obstetrics and Gynaecology examiners and 120 residents in #AOSS across various locations in Nigeria.
Following this success, the programme was granted a costed extension, enabling the expansion of its footprint to two additional geopolitical zones with training locations activities in Port Harcourt and Gombe State, further extending coverage and ensuring representation across all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria. This expansion reflects a critical step forward in ensuring equitable access to high-quality surgical and obstetric training, while promoting a nationwide standard of excellence in medical education and practice.
By equipping residents with advanced, lifesaving obstetric surgical skills, we are laying the groundwork for a more resilient and responsive healthcare system, one that is better prepared to meet the urgent needs of mothers and newborns.

A week ago, the #GHWP Nigeria Learning & Sharing Event brought together key stakeholders and health partners dedicated to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare sector marking the successful culmination of the one-year programme.
The event provided a platform for insightful discussions, shared experiences, and success stories, showcasing the progress made under the Global Health Workforce Programme (#GHWP).
Among the impactful initiatives highlighted was the Advanced Obstetric Surgical Skills Course (#AOSS), an advanced training program led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) in partnership with the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA). This program equips doctors specializing in Obstetrics and Gynaecology with essential surgical skills, ensuring they are better prepared to manage life-threatening complications during childbirth.
As we reflect on this transformative journey, we take pride in the progress made and the positive impact seen through invaluable frontline feedback.

Today, we are delighted to celebrate the successful culmination of the Global Health Workforce Programme at the Nigeria Sharing and Learning Event, happening live in Abuja. This event highlights the collective efforts of Health Partners (HP) to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system. Alongside the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, and other Health Partners, including in-country Grant Manager @Ducit_Blue , we are proud to share the transformative project’s key learnings, impacts, and success stories so far.
In her opening remarks, H.E. @ToyinSaraki , Founder and President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, expressed, “The Global Health Workforce Programme is a transformative initiative designed to optimize, build, and strengthen the health workforce, supporting more resilient health systems post-pandemic and advancing progress towards Universal Health Coverage in alignment with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3. Through its Health Partnership Initiative, GHWP fosters cross-border learning and capacity strengthening, ensuring that health professionals are well-equipped to provide high-quality care where it is needed most.”
The Global Health Workforce Programme, funding 14 Health Partners from Nigeria, the UK, Ghana, and Kenya, has trained 2,577 health workers in clinical skills, leadership, education, and Gender Equality & Social Inclusion (GESI), demonstrating the programme’s effectiveness in improving health outcomes.

As we approach the final phase of the Global Health Workforce Programme 2024, we are thrilled to reflect on the incredible impact made through the project, “Improving the availability and quality of emergency obstetric and newborn care at national and sub-national hospitals by strengthening the capacity of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.” Delivered by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), and supported by the Wellbeing Foundation Africa, this project exemplifies the health partnership approach to strengthening healthcare systems in Nigeria.
Since the program's inception in February 2024, 119 resident doctors and 82 NPMCN examiners have been trained in the Advanced Obstetrics Surgical Skills (AOSS) Course, equipping them with essential skills in emergency obstetrics and newborn care. This training took place at the programme’s Centers of Excellence (CoEs) in Abuja, and, Lagos, and in two additional centers in Kano, and Enugu, ensuring that doctors across Nigeria receive the highest level of training and contribute to improved care for mothers and newborns.
The feedback from trainees, including resident doctors and NPMCN faculty members, has been positive. During the training, 12 former NPMCN examiners were invited to become trainers for the residents, further increasing the cascade of knowledge sharing and capacity building. A key sustainable achievement of this project is integrating the AOSS curriculum into postgraduate medical education, ensuring a long-term, lasting impact on Nigeria's maternal and neonatal healthcare system.
With the continued support of our in-country grant manager, Ducit Blue, who has been a part of this journey from the beginning, and our stakeholders, we are excited about the impact and the incredible stories of progress that have been made so far.
