In praise of #SlowTranslation
Recalling my conversation with @Jeromobot after keynoting in Seoul #aptif9
RT @intewig @deborah__smith with thanks
@deborah__smith I like your new bio. "Translates little and slowly." We should all aspire.
And limit ability to explore, and to take risks and to make mistakes
As I said at my keynote #aptif9

Has digitalization endangered the literary wanderings of the flâneur? In his newly translated novel, Antonio Muñoz Molina explores an urban landscape that increasingly resembles that on the screen of a smartphone.

And this also forms part of the narrative on how #tech restricts #creativity and #imagination let alone the obvious suppression of #diversity I spoke about in #Seoul at #aptif9
Lovely to listen to Henry Líu discuss translation and interpreting. Sometimes technology causes more trouble than it's worth (how I feel about machine translation!). In today's world, important to take things slowly and prudently because mistakes and draft versions are kept. #xl8
Along the same line as my ode in praise of #SlowTranslation I spoke about at the #aptif9 keynote in #Seoul

As I said recently in #Seoul at #aptif9 and as early as #MTatWork at @translatores, translators are one of the few professions where adding technology lowers income.

Echoing what I said in #seoul during #APTIF9 on the perils of #automation and #digitization and its #homogenising effect.

@StavroulaSokoli Love to work with you!
Definitely interested in #pivotTranslation and #pivotInterpreting as I highlighted in #Seoul at #APTIF9, but I ain’t no expert in #pivotSubtitling
@ODerancy Enjoy!
I have an amazing time there earlier in the year during #aptif9 thanks to @jisooo_kwon and his team at @studyinkorea

The phenomenon of English as #pivot language and its dominance/influence in language pairs where English is not involved, as discussed in the last session of #aptif9, is not surprisingly also seen in discourses in sign languages
RT @katerowley0 and @crathmann at #DRRS2010
Good question from @crathmann how to avoid reliance on English glossing of sign languages (where main spoken language is NOT English)? Suggested solution, multilingual or bilingual glossing along with pictures & links to videos - DOI ensures permanent link. #DRRS2019

Essay grading software (used in 21 states) focuses on metrics like sentence length, vocab, spelling, & subject-verb agreement, but ignores hard-to-measure aspects like creativity.
Meaningless gibberish essays created with sophisticated words score well.

Cringe-worthy user testimonial about how Duolingo lets one gamify the language-learning experience and care only about winning. https://t.co/B6OCJERggd via @kotaku
More evidence of impact f #pivot language I spoke about. OST recently in #aptif9 in #Seoul
Another Burmese example to add to mine first presented in #NAER keynote in Taipei

All language combinations equally good for MT? See below the (pivot) translation of "They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold" from Modern Burmese Bible

More on #freedom and #translation
For those of you in Seoul at #aptif9 you would remember my quote from Prof @YoungmeMoon and how #tech impacts on freedom, #creativity, #experimentation and taking #risks and why it is important in translation
RT @RamsesNCO with thanks!
Another take on the importance of making mistakes in the life and growth of professionals, one of the key themes (alone with slow translation) I highlighted in my keynote at #aptif9 at @studyinkorea 🇰🇷
RT @aleduran23 with thanks!

On English as #pivot language
And the impact it has on translator, interpreter and terminologist training and day to day work I raised at #aptif9
RT @amelija16mp with thanks
Very interesting replies, thank you all!
I agree it's definitely task-specific, and for MT, if no English is involved the "resourceness" certainly drops...
I also like "under-" or "lesser-resourced" terms.
Beethoven String Quartet No 14 if I recall the original paper correctly, which I revisited with fresh perspective in my recent keynote at #APTIF9 after I first raised it in a public lecture at #Litteraturhuset @Litteraturhuset in #Oslo 🇳🇴 in 2013

Guys I didn't know that Baumol's effect was described with a Beethoven symphony!!!! Feelings somewhat hurt.
