The Mothers Before the Story Was Edited
Before temples crowned kings,
before doctrine replaced memory,
there was Asherah - also known as Athirat - the Great Mother of the #Levante.
She was not a consort tucked into the margins.
She was #creation itself:
the living matrix from which life unfolded.
In Ugaritic texts (c. 1400–1200 BCE), Asherah is called “She Who Gives Birth to the Gods.”
Seventy of them - not as rulers over humanity, but as forces of nature, seasons, nations, and balance.
The number seventy marked totality, not hierarchy.
It was cosmology, not empire.
Pre-Flood Memory, Post-Flood Continuity
Asherah’s worship long predates written scripture.
Archaeology places her veneration at least as early as c. 3500 BCE, with continuity through the Bronze Age and into early Israelite culture. Inscriptions from #Judah (c. 900–700 BCE) still invoke “#Yahweh and his Asherah” evidence not of her absence, but of her deliberate removal.
She survived catastrophe the way living systems do:
by changing names.
Her Living Symbols
Asherah was never represented by idols alone.

Lilith emerges later - not as a creator, but as what remains when the Mother is exiled. Where Asherah nurtures continuity, Lilith embodies refusal, autonomy, and survival under repression.
Same current.
Different historical pressure.
Why This Was Erased
Mother-centered cosmologies resist control.
They don’t crown kings.
They don’t sanction conquest. They teach reciprocity instead of domination.
So the groves were burned.
The names were split.
The Mother was reduced to myth.
But memory does not die.

Inscriptions from Kuntillet Ajrud (8th century BCE) invoke “Yahweh and his Asherah,” linking her to early Israelite worship.
A similar text at Khirbet el-Qom pairs them, suggesting she was once consort or sacred symbol. Her primary form:
