105 years ago, the Russian government tried to crush the Bashkirs through starvation. In February 1921, the Russian government launched a famine in Bashkortostan, confiscating food, livestock, and grain. Entire families and villages were destroyed, and more than 650,000 people died of starvation. “Entire families are dying of hunger… Mandatory state taxes continue to strangle them. Those who have nothing to pay with sell their last possessions. Many ate tree bark all winter. If this continues, they will all die. All that will remain of this people is a name, a name in history,” said Bashkir writer Mazhit Gafuri. “Several children died right in the school building. Murtazina Zainab, a student of nine, said she ate aspen bark and rotten fish. Her mother died from eating a raw horse bone,” wrote an eyewitness, a teacher from Birsk. Today, we honor the memory of the fallen Bashkirs, recalling their suffering and courage. We remember that the famine of 1921–1922 was a crime against the peaceful Bashkir population, aimed at suppressing and exterminating the people.
