In the last few weeks, we’ve seen a lot of discussion regarding trends in domestic airfares following the latest instalment of the #ACCC’s domestic airline competition in Australia report (Feb 2024).
Anecdotes of airfares are very poor indications of the market. #BITRE do a good job of tracking price benchmarks although they’re limited in what they can compel airlines to report. A stronger regulatory environment might compel airlines to report more data on prices & costs.
Looking at BITRE data, they show different trends to Qantas since they're measuring different things. BITRE have three price benchmarks: best discount (economy), restricted economy & business class.
I loved this episode on traffic engineering and traffic forecasting.
It prompted me to find this #BITRE review of their previous forecasts.
