The pothole-laden Velachery-Tambaram road was turned into a stretch of slush by the state highways officials overnight. How? The highways officials dumped loads of cement on the road recently to fill the potholes. As rain followed shortly thereafter, the cement did not set properly and the 15km stretch is now a mess, endangering the lives and limbs of motorists and other road users. Vehicle tyres, too, got stuck. The potholes have reemerged near Jayachandran Textiles, while potholes on the other side of the road were never covered. This four-lane stretch is used by commuters from Radial Road to reach West Tambaram areas, including the railway station. Highways assistant engineer Murugan said they dumped cement to fix the potholes. “We are actively working to attend to complaints. All the potholes are being fixed through bituminous patchups,” he said. With heavy rain on Tuesday, the stretch saw vehicles moving as slow as 10 kmph. With inundation covering up the craters and no caution signboards, cars moved towards the non-stagnated farright part of the lane to avoid falling into pits. Residents said the road connecting DAV School Lane and Kamakoti Signal on the Tambaram–Velachery stretch, has become vulnerable in recent years. The road gets inundated whenever it rains. It was a bad idea to lay concrete during the rain, as it got washed away the same day, they said. They added that while traffic was lighter due to the festivities, it is expected to get hectic and chaotic from Wednesday. The highways have been lethargic in fixing patches and potholes. Immediate action is needed to address this issue, they said. When contacted, the Tambaram corporation commissioner, S Balachander, said their limit ends at Gowrivakkam and Sembakkam, and the rest of the stretch comes under other departments.
