I had an amazing weekend singing and playing devotional music with youth from North Carolina and other parts of the country at the 2019 Epic Bhajan Jam! Some videos to come soon! #EBJ2019

So pleased with all the amazing discussions we had yesterday! Still thinking about all the original research and ideas talked about with this great group of people #EBJ2019
Thank you to Katherine and Marjorie, and everyone else who helped arrange and contributed to #EBJ2019. A wonderful dive into the many varied worlds of #BurneJones.
Me after a hard two days conferencing.

Thanks @burnejones2019 for an exceptional conference. So many ideas brought up that are very relevant to the work of Evelyn De Morgan. They are stylistically v similar. Going to reassess their relationship and whether they shared ideas. Watch this space #EBJ2019 @DeMorganF
Closing keynote by Stacey Sell (National Gallery of Art Washington DC) on EBJ tomb designs. Beautiful tree of life motif detail from cartoon for the tomb of Max Eberstadt. Great end to a fab conference! #EBJ2019
Didn’t get to add this into my paper but gosh darn it Sacha sums up my whole talk in one tweet #ebj2019
Where mythical creatures really come from:
The sea is scary!
Independent women are scarier!
-Mermaids
Storms are scary!
Independent women are scarier!
-Harpies
Snakes are scary!

The forest is scary!

Oops forgot my @Mermaids_Gender slide featuring @UKSculpture ‘s beautiful bust at the National Maritime Museum #EBJ2019
By challenging a default reading of mermaids as predatory, violent, dangerous, and sexual (even if as adults we CHOOSE to enjoy those elements) we undermine paranoid misogynist tropes of dangerous gendered or fluid bodies #EBJ2019
Last week we got the excellent news that @Mermaids_Gender would receive their Big Lottery funding after all. I understand that they took their name because young trans kids identify with mermaids regularly and with intensity #EBJ2019
Finally, the appeal of mermaids to children is what I want to close with. It is vital to reconsider how we discuss feminine figures like mermaids whose gender is slippery because these stereotypes map onto the transphobic myths deployed against people and organisations #EBJ2019
Finishing off an amazing day of talks with our second and final keynote, Start Sell! #EBJ2019
Due to time I can’t get into the various modes of mermaid reproduction, but I have spoken before about sequential hermaphroditism, polyandry, and asexual reproduction like coral budding, such as @danielortberg discussed in The Daughter Cells #EBJ2019
And why assume she’s female? Those breasts might be nothing more than sailor-bait on a merperson of any gender, like a Page 3 Anglerfish. For comparison we don’t assume all Red Lipped Batfish are girls in Mac Ruby Woo!(thanks @sacha_coward for this fish) #EBJ2019
Man! I Eel Like A Woman #EBJ2019
Based on her tail, and the rocky, bare ground in the deeps, we might think of her as something like a European Conger eel (Conger conger), commonly found off our English coasts and known to occasionally attack human divers https://t.co/6bofqdmF8U https://t.co/6bofqdmF8U #EBJ2019
