@RobertKennedyJr, Seven years ago yesterday, the @US_FDA issued 21 CFR Part 882 establishing deadline for the @APApsychiatric’s long awaited #electroconvulsive therapy performance measures, requiring device manufacturers submit rigorous safety testing (PMA) and dosing consensus standards (PDP), and special controls by 2019. Court records and FOIA responses revealed 100% noncompliance. Zero manufacturers submitted FDA required safety testing, dosing consensus standards or “special controls.” In the absence of FDA enforcement, ECT in community settings continues as an unmonitored experimental procedure unbeknownst to patients, their families, caregivers, legal guardians, judges, and policy makers. It is my mission to shine a spotlight on this until the United States (and the rest of the world) recognizes institutional Psychiatry has been breaking medical ethics laws established in the US Belmont Report based on the Nuremberg Code—since they were established—with impunity and for ever increasing profit at the cost of the livelihood and lives of many who receive it. This horrific human rights atrocity is a yet unresolved tragedy of American Medicine. When will we properly address it? Part of the problem in recognizing ECT’s adverse event realities is the complex nature of using a medical procedure without standard practices governing the 2,000+ electrical field strength dosages, arbitrarily chosen by physicians without formal sub specialty training in histopathology, neuropathy, or biophysics of applying nearly an ampere currently to the cranial nerves involved in the trigeminocardiac reflex. Historically, those without formal sub specialty training in those areas have reassured the public of ECT’s “safety” without any record of safety testing or dosing limits based on safety testing with medical device regulators—relying heavily on medical traditions of predecessors licensed in the 1930’s -1950’s.
This public health crisis eagerly awaits @RobertKennedyJr’s enforcement of the FDA’s final order on these now adulterated medical devices.
