It’s been one year since the bloody El Fasher massacres took place in #Sudan , yet human rights reports indicate that the city’s residents continue to suffer from torture and detention, rising rates of malnutrition, and a pervasive climate of fear.

Muammar Ibrahim was the voice of Elfashir, the loudest journalistic voice reporting out of the city.
Not only did he report on the realities of the 18-month siege, he lived them, wasting away as the RSF starved & choked the life out of Elfashir.

One year after the fall of El Fasher, I write about the city where I was born and raised, the life we lost, and friends whose fate remains unknown .

✅️ Immediate and Unconditional Release of Journalist Muammar Ibrahim

#Sudan | UNHO Calls for the Immediate and Unconditional Release of Journalist Muammar Ibrahim
The United Network for Humanity Observatory
(UNHO) condemns the continued detention of Sudanese journalist Muammar Ibrahim by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since 26 October 2025, following his arrest in El Fasher. UNHO calls for his immediate and unconditional release, the disclosure of his place of detention, and guarantees for his physical and psychological safety.
The Observatory expresses grave concern over his continued detention amid the absence of reliable information about his health and legal status, reports that his family has been unable to communicate with him, and allegations that his health has deteriorated and he has been denied necessary medical care. These circumstances raise serious concerns that require urgent intervention to protect him and uphold his fundamental rights.
UNHO calls on the RSF to release him immediately, ensure without delay that he receives the necessary medical care and is able to communicate with his family and legal counsel, and allow independent humanitarian and human rights organisations to verify his safety and conditions of detention. The Observatory also stresses the need to respect legal safeguards, prohibit torture and ill-treatment, and refrain from using detention to punish journalists for their professional work.
The continued detention of journalists under circumstances that leave their families without information about their whereabouts raises serious concerns for their safety and undermines press freedom and the right to access information. UNHO emphasises that protecting journalists is an obligation under relevant international law and that responsibility for Muammar Ibrahim’s safety rests with the force holding him in custody.
The United Network for Humanity Observatory urges relevant international human rights and press freedom organisations to intensify their efforts to secure Muammar Ibrahim’s safety, press for his immediate and unconditional release, and monitor the circumstances of journalists detained or reported missing in Sudan. These efforts must help safeguard their lives and rights and ensure accountability for violations.

One year after the massacre

#Sudan | El Fasher : One Year After the Massacre
As El Fasher marks the first anniversary of the massacre, the United Network for Humanity Observatory (UNHO) reflects on the assault that took place in the city in October 2025 and the devastating loss of life and grave violations inflicted on civilians. According to a report issued by the UN Human Rights Office on 13 February 2026, more than 6,000 people were documented as killed during the first three days of the Rapid Support Forces’ assault. This included at least 4,400 people inside the city and more than 1,600 who were killed while attempting to flee, following an 18-month siege. The report documented patterns of mass killings, summary executions, sexual violence, abductions, torture, arbitrary detention and enforced disappearances.
Concerns persist over the fate of detainees and missing persons. In May 2026, UN Special Procedures reported allegations that around 9,000 people, including women, were being detained at Shalla Prison in El Fasher, amid reports of deaths in custody and shortages of food, water and medical care. This figure reflects information received by UN mechanisms and should not be treated as a final, independently verified count.
The United Network for Humanity Observatory underscores that documenting the events in El Fasher is an essential humanitarian and human rights imperative. Preserving evidence, establishing the fate of victims and missing persons, ensuring independent and effective investigations, and holding those responsible for violations accountable under international law are critical priorities. UNHO calls on the international community to take urgent and effective measures to protect civilians, strengthen accountability efforts, and ensure that those responsible for serious crimes are not allowed to escape justice, while upholding the dignity of victims and the rights of survivors.

They were welcomed by Sudanese community initiatives, into their homes and their hearts.
On this first anniversary, we say to them: you are not alone. And to those who stepped up: thank you, and may you be rewarded. 🤍

On the first anniversary of #ElFasher, we remember those who left but refused to be silenced:
Mohamed Khamis Doda, who documented the siege until he was killed;
Father Luca Gomo Bano, the Catholic pastor who stayed with his flock;
and the activist Siham Hassan Hasab Allah.
One year after El Fasher fell, the atrocities have not been erased, and the suffering has not ended. Civilians continue to face killings, torture, arbitrary detention and unimaginable terror.
we urge everyone: circulate this on every platform..

#ElFasher | A Massacre Whose Traces the Earth Could Not Conceal from Space
The Rapid Support Forces’ takeover of El Fasher in October 2025 left a trail of bloodshed documented through testimonies, visual evidence, and satellite imagery analysis. The United Nations Human Rights Office documented the killing of more than 6,000 people over three days, between 25 and 27 October, amid reports of summary executions, ethnic targeting, sexual violence, detention, and torture.
In this report, the United Network for Humanity Observatory (UNHO) examines documented incidents and patterns of violations, calling for independent investigations to preserve evidence, establish the fate of missing persons, and determine responsibility for the crimes.
What the evidence has revealed must not be erased, and what testimonies have documented must lead to accountability.
