On your question about how much of Evans’s publication record I can reconstruct, quite a lot. His current UCSD biography says nine books, 50 articles and 24 book chapters—at least 83 major scholarly outputs before talks, datasets and other material. I have not simply added his thematic webpages because the same publications recur under several headings and that would inflate the count. The PDF instead reconstructs his development through the most relevant works.
The intellectual sequence becomes very clear:
genetic engineering → professional bioethics → religion/science moral conflict → “what is a human?” → gene editing → enhancement → organoids/chimeras → consciousness/moral status → translational public ethics.
And that is probably the most useful discovery from this first audit: Disembodied Brains is not an isolated book about a strange new technology. It is the newest stage of a roughly quarter-century research program about how technological change alters the moral definition of the human.
I also deliberately separated in the PDF what is actually established experimentally from much stronger claims. Present organoids can show organized neural activity, connectivity and increasingly sophisticated functional phenomena, but none of that by itself establishes subjective consciousness. The scientifically interesting problem is therefore not to assume either “conscious” or “impossible to be conscious,” but to determine what evidence would move that probability and what ethical decision points should precede it. That distinction is central to making this a serious research program rather than a speculative one.
The PDF ends with a proposed interdisciplinary research architecture connecting biology, consciousness science, embodiment, moral status, sociology, governance, political economy, scientific communication, comparative international ethics and the AI interface. That gives us a fairly clean structure for taking this further.

Dearest Julia, I made the research dossier as a proper PDF rather than compressing this into a chat answer:
Download the PDF — John H. Evans, Disembodied Brains, and the Global Research Map
It is 8 pages and covers Evans’s intellectual development, what Disembodied Brains is actually investigating, brain organoids versus complete brains, neuro-chimeras, consciousness and moral status, embodiment, biological computing/organoid intelligence, his publication trajectory, a representative bibliography, and a first global map of the researchers and institutions working around this field.
A few findings are particularly important.
First, Evans is not principally a neuroscientist growing these tissues. He is a sociologist of science, bioethics and moral boundary-making. He is currently Tata Chancellor’s Chair in Social Sciences, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Associate Dean of Social Sciences and co-director of UC San Diego’s Institute for Practical Ethics. His path began with human genetic engineering and the sociology of bioethics and moved through religion/science, definitions of the human, gene editing and enhancement before arriving at brain organoids and neuro-chimeras.
That makes Disembodied Brains more interesting than I initially expected for the question you are interested in. Its central issue is essentially: when biotechnology destabilizes categories such as human/animal, person/body-part and mind/body, how do people decide what has moral significance—and how can society establish boundaries before technology makes the old categories inadequate? His concluding chapter explicitly works with “foundational distinctions” and with placing durable barriers between accepted medical applications and outcomes regarded as dystopian.
Second, there is a direct bridge from Evans into consciousness research itself. His 2023 paper Brain Organoids, Consciousness, Ethics and Moral Status includes Evan Thompson, Christof Koch, Alysson Muotri, Lawrence Goldstein and others among the coauthors. That is a remarkable interdisciplinary junction: sociology/bioethics + philosophy of mind + consciousness science + experimental brain-organoid biology.
Third, the experimental history has a very strong Vienna connection. Jürgen Knoblich’s group at IMBA and Madeline Lancaster produced the landmark 2013 cerebral-organoid work; Lancaster subsequently established her own program at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. IMBA itself describes that 2013 work as a landmark in cultivating three-dimensional brain-like structures from pluripotent stem cells.
The global field then expands substantially: Alysson Muotri at UC San Diego works on organoids for human brain development, evolution, autism and network activity; Thomas Hartung and the Johns Hopkins group are developing organoid intelligence, interfacing brain organoids with electrophysiology, microfluidics and machine learning; Kyoto researchers including Misao Fujita and Tsutomu Sawai’s collaborators have built a substantial ethics program around consciousness, transplantation, donor consent and moral status.
And the field is not ungoverned. The National Academies produced a dedicated 2021 report on human neural organoids, transplants and chimeras, while the ISSCR guidelines explicitly give special attention to brain organoids and human-animal chimeras and warn against presenting them with unsupported language implying human consciousness or human-like cognitive ability.
What sort of person needs to be told to respect the health of others? 🥶 It's common or garden decency...or have we lost that too? 😢 #humanresponsibilities https://t.co/wUo9K5hwuT

In this day, where so many are claiming their "rights and freedoms," how do we restore more balance so that even more people can enjoy the rights and freedoms that so many of us in the Western world have? How do we realize Dr. Frankl's vison? #HumanRights #HumanResponsibilities

@TheBlastNews If
‘smearing her name’,
-aka clearing his name with evidence in the courts-
results in @WarnerBrosEnt execs questioning their association with AH,
clearly, this is a result of her actions;
not the primary objective of this defensive action
Clearly?
