A blogger has shared footage on social media showing the remains of a historic Azerbaijani mosque located in the Tapabashi neighbourhood of Iravan, capital of Armenia. The footage reveals that the mosque has now been turned into a place where alcoholic beverages are served. This is an open provocation that infringing on the religious and cultural dignity of the Azerbaijani people.
The deliberate destruction of Azerbaijani cultural monuments by Armenia and the erasure of the Azerbaijani people's cultural traces in present-day Armenia is a gross violation of international law, including the 1954 Hague Convention and relevant UNESCO documents. These actions by Armenia pose a serious obstacle to achieving peace and reconciliation in the region.
We strongly protest the destruction of the Tapabashi mosque, a cultural heritage site, and such a disrespectful use of its remains. We call on UNESCO and other international organizations to take urgent action, including pressuring Armenia to restore and protect the mosque and other destroyed Azerbaijani monuments.
We demand that the Armenian government immediately fulfil its obligations to restore and protect all destroyed or falsified cultural monuments belonging to the Azerbaijani people.
