This orientation better matches the @NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory. And here's a shot about 40 minutes later (no stack).
Today's partial solar eclipse at @IUBloomington was challenging with nearly 100% clouds and intermittent rain.
Around the peak, we managed a brief glimpse through the clouds! Thanks to @iuastro and Kirkwood Observatory for hosting us! @IULuddy is happy to partner anytime!
One of our alums sent us this picture of the annular eclipse from New Mexico! #IUBEclipse
The partial eclipse is now coming to an end in Bloomington. We hope you enjoyed spending the day learning about eclipses! Send us your eclipse pictures with the hashtag #IUBEclipse, and make sure to join us for the total eclipse on April 8, 2024!

One last break in the clouds before the eclipse ends! #IUBEclipse
Wylie attempted to photograph the eclipse; however, when totality began, he dropped everything to observe it. He wrote in his diary: โ...endeavoring to Photograph the sun, but when the totality came on, we both broke and ran to see it & let the important moment pass.โ #IUBEclipse
At the @IUBloomington Kirkwood Observatory to work with @iuastro for eclipse outreach and live viewing, but it doesn't look promising.
But @IULuddy is ready just in case!
The last time Bloomington was in the path of totality for a solar eclipse was in 1869. This eclipse was observed by notable IU professors Theophilus Wylie, Daniel Kirkwood, and Elisha Ballantine on the roof of the Wylie House in Bloomington. #IUBEclipse
Our grad student Tash got a great picture of the sun through the clouds! #IUBEclipse
Prominences are seen extending out from the disk of the sun, against the background of the sun. Similar features seen in front of the disk of the sun are called filaments. Filaments appear dark because the gas extending outward is cooler than the sunโs surface below. #IUBEclipse
Our grad students Kristin and Emma got these pictures of the eclipse! #IUBEclipse
The partial eclipse is now reaching maximum coverage in Bloomington! #IUBEclipse
On the livestream, we may also be able to see prominences: large, bright features extending out from the surface of the sun. Prominences can extend for thousands of miles away from the surface of the sun. #IUBEclipse
We've got a nice crowd of people enjoying the eclipse here at Kirkwood! #IUBEclipse
Eclipse!! #IUBeclipse
Total solar eclipses are possible because the sun is about 400 times bigger than the moon, but also about 400 times farther away. This causes the sun and the moon to have the same apparent size in the sky, making it possible for the moon to block out the sun. #IUBEclipse
A lunar eclipse occurs during a full moon, when the Earth passes directly between the sun and the moon and casts a shadow on the moon: โ๏ธ๐๐ #IUBEclipse
