On this exact day in 1981, the iconic Jaffna Public Library in Sri Lanka was deliberately set on fire by state-sponsored mobs. It wasn't just a building burning; it was an intentional attack on Tamil history and identity. Over 97,000 rare books, irreplaceable ancient palm-leaf manuscripts, and centuries of historical documents were reduced to ashes overnight. The heartbreak was so immense that a prominent local scholar even died of a heart attack witnessing the flames. The trauma of seeing their cultural heart destroyed alienated the minority population and heavily fueled the decades-long Sri Lankan Civil War. To this day, the burning of the Jaffna Library remains an unhealed wound for the community worldwide.
