The Sri Lanka trip was also a special moment to recognise two outstanding contributors to global chess: Bharat Singh Chauhan and Luxman Wijesuriya. For five decades, both have devoted enormous energy to building chess across Asia and the Commonwealth - through events, federation work, youth development, and international cooperation. Their dedication has helped create opportunities for generations of players and strengthened the global chess family. Grateful for their friendship, commitment, and service to our sport. Many chess colleagues and I personally learned a lot from them and we all appreciate their contribution to chess worldwide.

Honoured to attend the opening of the Commonwealth Chess Championships in Sri Lanka! An impressive event bringing together players from 14 countries and across all age groups - another strong example of Asia’s growing role in world chess. It was great to see old friends and make new ones, and discuss FIDE’s work on expanding opportunities for players, youth development, and strengthening international cooperation through chess. Thank you to the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and everyone involved for the warm welcome.
