#KillerofSheep Dir. Charles Burnett. 1977, 83 mins. U.S. DCP. With Henry G. Sanders, Kaycee Moore, Charles Bracy, Angela Burnett. Charles Burnett’s
Killer of Sheep is a poetically rendered narrative that follows Stan (Henry G. Sanders), who is employed at the slaughterhouse and suffering from the emotional side effects of his bloody occupation.
An impressionistic portrait of a Black family man eaten up by life’s financial burdens, fighting to save his soul and support his family in Los Angeles’s Watts neighbourhood,
Killer of Sheep is an aesthetic triumph, touched as much by tenderness as frustration, and fuelled by the internal emotional rhythms of all its characters, from Stan to his wife (Kaycee Moore) to their free-spirited kids.
Director Burnett also wrote, shot, and edited this American masterpiece, the most widely celebrated film of the fabled “L.A. Rebellion” of Black filmmakers revolutionising cinema in the seventies.
It's already a collector's item. @MilestoneFilms dvd of Charles Burnett's #KillerofSheep is the only way to read my liner notes essay on that classic, connecting it to the Blues and CInema history. That mean's the only version you need. Thanks, Teo and Dennis and Amy.
Charles Burnett's #KillerofSheep is so revered it's been an albatross for Burnett whose imagination encompasses psychocomedy "The Annihilation of Fish," historical fable "Nightjohn" and neorealist etudes like "The Final Insult" and ""When It Rains." @KinoLorber

Charles Burnett’s KILLER OF SHEEP (1978) 📽️ Entering the Criterion Collection this May! https://t.co/kyoEcBvEt3
A quiet revelation of American independent filmmaking, Charles Burnett’s lyrical debut feature unfolds as a mosaic of Black life in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles.
***ANNOUNCEMENT***
Coming on May 27th on #4K and Blu-ray in the US from @Criterion: #KillerOfSheep (1978)!
A quiet revelation of American independent filmmaking, Charles Burnett’s lyrical debut feature unfolds as a mosaic of Black life in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, where Stan (Henry Gayle Sanders), a father worn down by his job in a slaughterhouse, and his wife (Kaycee Moore) seek moments of tenderness in the face of myriad disappointments. Equally attuned to the world of children and that of adults, Burnett—acting as director, writer, producer, cinematographer, and editor—finds poetry amid everyday struggles in indelible images that glow with compassionate beauty. Largely unseen for decades following its completion in 1977, Killer of Sheep is now recognized as a touchstone of the groundbreaking LA Rebellion movement, and a masterpiece that brought Black American lives to the screen with an aching intimacy like no film before.
Killer of Sheep was restored and remastered by UCLA Film & Television Archive, Milestone Films, and the Criterion Collection.
