A case has been registered against four men for allegedly assaulting a migrant labourer from #Jharkhand, suspecting him of being a #Bangladeshi national illegally staying in #Mangaluru, police said on Monday, January 12.
The incident took place at #Kulur on the outskirts of the city on Sunday.
According to police, the victim has been working in Mangaluru as a migrant labourer for the past 10–15 years, staying in the city for four to six months every year for work.
The accused allegedly confronted the victim, questioned his nationality, and demanded that he produce identity documents.
Despite the victim repeatedly asserting that he was an Indian citizen, the men allegedly continued to harass him and made objectionable remarks.
When the victim refused to comply further, he was allegedly assaulted with tools belonging to him, resulting in a serious head injury and heavy bleeding.
A local woman intervened and helped rescue him, police said.
Officials said the victim did not immediately approach the police due to fear, being a migrant worker, and returned home without lodging a complaint.
The matter later came to the attention of the police after local leaders raised concerns and sought action.
Following verification, authorities confirmed that the victim is an Indian citizen who had come to Mangaluru for employment.
Based on the findings, police have booked the accused under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 109 (Attempt to Murder), and several other sections of BNS including 352, (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 353(statements inciting public mischief), 118(1) (voluntarily causing hurt) r/w 3(5), according to Sudhir Kumar Reddy Commissioner of Police Mangaluru city.
The accused have been identified as residents of Kulur.
Police said instructions have been issued to arrest the accused immediately and further investigation is underway.
A #Muslim migrant labourer from #Jharkhand was assaulted by four people in the coastal city of #Karnataka’s #Mangaluru who accused him of being a ‘#Bangladeshi’, while demanding proof of his citizenship.
The migrant, identified as #DiljanAnsari, used to work for around 4-6 months every year for the past 10-15 years in Mangaluru.
The incident, according to the #MangaluruPolice, took place between 6.30-6.40 pm Sunday evening in the Kavoor police station limits in the communally sensitive coastal district of Karnataka.
“The migrant labourer from Jharkhand was assaulted by four #Hindus who alleged that he was a Bangladeshi and demanded that he show all kinds of proofs along with some unwanted and unnecessary comments,” Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said in a statement Monday.
The suspects were identified as Sagar, Dhanush, Lalu (alias Rathish), and Mohan, all residents of Kulur. While they are suspected to be members of a fringe #Hindutva outfit, this has not yet been confirmed. All four individuals are currently absconding.
The police said that the miscreants hit Ansari and that “some local #Hindu woman” came and rescued him. Ansari was too afraid to give a complaint but some others brought this to the attention of the local police.
Reddy said that it was verified that Ansari was “an Indian” and came to Mangaluru for work.
The police have lodged a case under Section of 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 109 (causing hurt to a person), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), 353 (circulation of false information), 118(1) r/w 3(5) of (voluntarily causes hurt by means of any instrument for shooting, stabbing or cutting) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The assault of Ansari eerily similar to the growing pattern of attacks on migrants by miscreants, often accusing the victims as ‘illegal Bangladeshi immigrants’.
Incidentally, the assault took place on the same day that Karnataka Chief Minister #Siddaramaiah was in the city for the unveiling of a new tourism policy to attract more visitors to the region and help boost the local economy.
Near Royal Oak, #Kulur, her vehicle fell into a large pothole, causing her to lose control and fall by the roadside.
At that moment, a lorry travelling from the #Udupi side towards #Mangaluru, ran over Madhavi.
She sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 44-year-old woman from #Karnataka’s #Mangaluru died after the two-wheeler she was riding allegedly toppled over a #Pothole, causing her to fall under the wheels of a moving lorry on the national highway near #Kulur on September 9.
