Natural Language Processing (NLP) is revolutionising communication, yet over 2,000 African languages remain digitally silent.
Despite the continent's linguistic richness, 92% of these languages lack basic digitised texts, and 97% have no annotated datasets for fundamental NLP tasks.
This isn't just a data issue; it's a call to action. Languages like Swahili and Yoruba possess complex structures and tonal nuances that challenge existing AI models.
For instance, Yoruba's three-tone system means that pitch determines meaning—ignore that, and you risk significant misinterpretation.
It's time to bridge the digital divide and ensure that African languages are not left behind in the AI revolution.
By prioritising inclusivity and investing in Afrocentric NLP, we can create technology that truly understands and represents the diverse voices of Africa.
