ICYMI: Earlier today, 26 members of #NEleg, including the introducer of #LB364, voted against an anti-discrimination amendment that would have addressed many senators' concerns about diverting millions to private schools w/o civil rights protections in place for Nebraskans.

#LB364 I laugh when I hear that argument that teachers could make more in the "private sector", when it is generally understood that private schools by necessity pay less.

#LB364 Amazing. Senators Hunt, M. Cavanaugh, Morfeld, M. Hansen, Pansing-Brooks, J. Cavanaugh, &c. attempt to keep on the subject, and then a pro-LB364 talks and it's like they haven't heard a thing. I suppose showing how "pro-opportunity" you are is just too hard to resist.

@DeAngelisCorey Discussing Sen. @Adam_Morfeld's AM on #LB364 re: financial accountability seems a pertinent time to ask why out-of-state orgs like @schoolchoicenow + @edchoice are so invested in #NEleg. How much have they spent here? How much do they stand to gain? For SGOs, it's 5-10%.

#LB364 I don't think we will ever find our way back to the rails. A tax credit discussion veered all the way over to race, schools, competing unverified studies, special ed, DC schools, dismissal of honest statements, personal offense, and 8 more hours gone.

Sen. @nebraskamegan: Voting for #LB364 does not improve @OmahaPubSchool. It punishes the kids they serve. Goes on to explain the 💵-for-💵 tax credit is 14.5 times more generous than any other kind of charitable giving & shifts tax burden to low- and middle-income Nebraskans.

@NebraskaMegan rightly thanks @MattHansenNE, @senatormachaela, and @Patty4Nebraska for their comments after #AM1051 was hatefully defeated. I thank them too. And I thank Senator Hunt for attempting to make #LB364 palatable and passable. May #LB364 go down in deserved flames.

The PROBLEM w/ #neleg #LB364 ISN'T the $5 million fiscal note. The problem is the aftermath, undoing Nebraska's commitment to protect public education. It opens the door for: -charter schools -preferential treatment for private schools -public school funding reductions -and more

AM from @NebraskaMegan would’ve made private schools take in all special needs kids with $0 of funding. Many private schools would love to serve these kids but don’t have the fed $$ public schools do. This was a poison pill to the bill, and you wonder if she knew that. #lb364

#NEleg just voted against an amendment to #LB364 that would have protected the civil rights of Nebraskans and prevented private schools from discriminating against kids + parents.

Sen. @NebraskaMegan reviewed the policies of private schools in Omaha, and only one stated they don't discriminate based on gender or sexual orientation. "We know private schools discriminate." #LB364 does nothing to protect Nebraskans from discrimination.

In #LB364, assisting historically marginalized students is a potential side effect, NOT the primary intent and certainly not guaranteed. Though Sen Linehan has been amenable to changes, graciously incorporating additional restrictions, the bill's intent is a non-starter. 3/3

When #neleg senators aren't forthcoming re: legislative intent or a bill's unintended consequences (e.g. #LB364 opens the door for private schools to receive public $$$), guardrails, eligibility, and benefit floors or ceilings aren't included in the drafting process. 1/
