#OTD in #history, 1904, American diplomat George F. Kennan was born. He is most famous for his role in shaping the #UnitedStates' Cold War policy after WW2, arguing for "containment of Russian expansive tendencies" that led #Congress to pass foreign aid such as the Marshall Plan.

The telegram was 8000 words. Kennan, writing as “Mr. X,” published an outline of his philosophy in the prestigious journal Foreign Affairs in 1947.
Kennan’s Long Telegram incited intellectual policy debate that formed the basis of US policy towards the Soviet Union, including the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan.
