Something to read for my students who recently have been studying Chomsky and social construction of knowledge. What does one suppose the consequences are for online speech acts in courses and in workplace? #LTEC6010
English language has evolved like a living creature.
Historians have long acknowledged that social & cognitive factors shape language over time.
Certain words or pronunciations get used because theyβre associated with people who have status & #power.

#LTEC6010 On the topic of poverty: When students don't see a way out of poverty, their desires to learn and ability to understand is clouded by the situation. We learn based on what we know (Cognitive Theory) and build on that knowledge. It becomes difficult to redirect.
@FranTechTeacher @digitelle @constatively @ASUPREPSTEM I don't know about you, but sometimes getting my students to talk, especially when the semester is new, is like pulling teeth! #LTEC6010
@digitelle @constatively (2/2) ...who wouldn't do their work. Later surprised/upset: "You GAVE ME an F!" So I set up 10 assignments in a unit and had them grade themselves. They had to write out "I turned in 3 assignments - my grade is 30. F" Natural cause & effect! #LTEC6010
@digitelle @constatively (1/2) You know, I kinda enjoy imagining that situation. It leads to a wonderful example of a "natural cause and effect situation". Student refuses access to material --> student fails. No muss, no fuss! It reminds me of a situation w/ 4th graders... #LTEC6010
@digitelle @constatively @ASUPREPSTEM I guess I was thinking more along the lines of what happens in my classroom, where I (as teacher) need to train my students to ask for clarification and to create the environment where my kids want to clarify thoughts/ideas and feel comfortable in doing so. #LTEC6010
@constatively @AEreman βFaculty involved in online learning find themselves acting as a combination of content experts, learning process design experts, process
implementation managers, motivators, mentors, and interpreters" (Massy & William, p. 16). https://t.co/XwCtNTQkr8 #LTEC6010
If communication is the topic of inquiry in a particular setting, can we experiment to capture how much communication is lost per delivery mechanism (Slack, LMS, Twitter, FB, text, phone, VoIP, etc to see what the actual efficiency of substitution tools for FTF is? #LTEC6010
@constatively @Jhernandezusa I think if you're not thoughtfully designing the responses, and you're using something like PollEverywhere, then maybe. But maybe a student who won't raise their hand will admit "No, I don't get it" to a prompt they respond to via PollEverywhere #LTEC6010
@constatively Yes. I'm not sure about how to set it up. Are we testing the info from the video from edpuzzle for our data? There are a million ways to get data both tech and not. Or we can test against another class who didn't use edpuzzle/tech to have a c/c between data/no data. #LTEC6010
@FranTechTeacher @EdTechMellissa @constatively The littles get so excited! One of the reasons I love teaching with tech! #LTEC6010
@constatively I'm having a negative influence from the tech right now, which surprises me: I've typed & deleted a # of responses, b/c the act of setting it in writing makes me hesitate. In FTF convo, however, I'd be willing to start my thought and amend it as the convo progresses. #LTEC6010
@constatively share documents via Google suite, etc. I don't think that we can set up a way to test harm v benefit for this. Like @EdTechMellissa stated students are proficient at communicating in different ways, so who do we test at what level? #LTEC6010
@constatively Considering these writings are from the 70's, I would argue that tech today doesn't distort nearly as much. There are so many more ways to communicate technologically there is no reason for human communications to be unclear. We can use Zoom, videos, make cartoons, #LTEC6010 1/2
@KinardWidad @constatively And what works for one subject or skill may not work for another. #LTEC6010
@KPHPhD @EdTechMellissa @constatively The Kinder kids using it in our district were able to see each other's work, and they just loved it! I was taking vid of a K student explaining how to use QR, and she loved explaining how they can see their friends' stuff on SeeSaw. #LTEC6010
@ASUPREPSTEM Love the example. Bandura taught social norms through Spanish soap operas once upon a time.... #LTEC6010
@KPHPhD @constatively @AustinHaynes3 @ReemMZD With younger Ss, I must balance the desire for independent prob solving w/ the need to instill foundational knowledge to even address the issue. Using Lego robotics now, where Ss follow instructions to build a robot, collect data, & rebuild later to meet a challenge. #LTEC6010
@constatively Interesting, but I would argue that that impacts a subset of the population - not the population as a whole. Also, I would be more interested in the credentials of the college or university as to its viability, more than online vs traditional. #LTEC6010
@constatively There's a co., edpuzzle, that allows you to create questions for Ss to answer at any point in the video & they can't move on until they do. You can also place comments. In the short term, we can see that they got the info. You create any kind of question you want. #LTEC6010 1/2
