@realscientists @MySci_PK I began reading pop science books in my 20s. The Double Helix hooked me on genetics. Later, my first DNA extraction in my first lab job double-hooked me.
@realscientists Generating a standing wave in the bathtub with two fingers, after learning about wave theory......kept doing it for years, really entertaining.... #MyFirstScience
I love reading the #MyFirstScience stories! Seeing how tiny moments can change the course of a life.
Mine: my dad was a sailor in the era before GPS. He would take me out and show me the stars, and talk about how to navigate by them. I still have the star chart we used.
@realscientists @MySci_PK My #MyFirstScience was watching my slightly older brother putting pressure on my best friend's wound. I was around three and seeing the red "river" stopping fascinated me enough to haunt me at that time and wanting to understand better the physiology of the body when older π
@realscientists #myfirstscience was 1) melting ice-cubes in our backyard, realising that if you broke one cube in half it melted faster with same amount of ice 2) trying to observe the generation of my own thoughts and seeing how many levels I could go by thinking about thinking about thinking
@realscientists @AmoebaSisters @MySci_PK Learning about space in 6th grade. I didn't know almost any of stuff I was reading about even existed. If I had gone my whole life without knowing that, what else was out there that I didn't know? Gave me a hungar to find out.
@realscientists #MyFirstScience
my memory of mathematics and seeing the patterns in counting by tens, I think I was 4. At age 6 or 7 I was asking about whether people were made of atoms. That was my biggest influence, trying to find out of what life is made.
This is one of the best! π

#MyFirstScience has to be my first lesson on DNA and RNA. Everything what we look like and are made of is determined by the genes we carry . WOW. Pedigree
Every living thing has a genome..including viruses and bacteria. Then mutations and recombinant DNA.. I could go on @MySci_PK
Let us bring #MyFirstScience back!
What is YOUR first memory of being fascinated by science?
Tag me (@MySci_PK ) and/or reply to this tweet.
@realscientists @MySci_PK Mine dates back to nursery when I was about 4 where I was fascinated by magnets.. How and why did they stick together one way, but not the other, and how you could build towers that wouldn't fall over easily! #MyFirstScience
#MyFirstScience was a science fair project: "The Leg of the Horse in Health and Disease." My best friend and I learned *so* much about soft tissue. I wanted to be a vet. Whatever a kid's favorite thing is, that's a way into science!
(pic: older me, same horse though!)

#Science instilled in me the importance of really examining the #evidence at hand, then drawing the most logical conclusions based on the #facts. But when I was a kid, I just thought it was SUPER COOL.
Can you guess #MyFirstScience??
@realscientists @MySci_PK Grade 4 - I tested the effects of coffee vs water on bean growth because I wanted to drink coffee but my parents said it would stunt my growth. Even at that age, I was obsessed with coffee!
#MyFirstScience
@realscientists @MySci_PK #MyFirstScience when I watched frog spawn turn into tadpoles and tadpoles turn into tiny frogs! Which led to realising that butterflies came from caterpillars... and I was off!
@realscientists @MySci_PK 1971. My year 7 science teacher explained what science is.
"Not chemistry, not physics, not lab coats, test tubes or bunsen burners. Science is the accumulated knowledge of those who came before us and which we build upon for those that will follow".
Mrs Wright had me hooked!
@realscientists @MySci_PK Learning about volume aged 5. 'Water in the big pot won't fit in the smaller pot' said teacher...my young scientific mind thought that's a hypothesis to test...water everywhere...blew my mind haha...teacher less impressed!
