機能的MRIを使用して画像を抽出する方法が一般的です。
NeurbioticsとMIPTの研究チームは、頭皮に置かれた電極から脳波を収集する電気生理学（EEG）を使用しました。
そうすることで、研究者はビデオや画像を見ているときの脳の活動を分析し、
機械学習システムに使用できる入力特徴を取得することができました。
機械学習システムは、人物が目撃した画像を再構築し、リアルタイムに画面に
表示することができました。
実験は複数の段階に分けられました。
最初の段階では、研究者は被験者に
10秒間のYouTubeビデオクリップを
約20分間見るよう指示しました。
ビデオは5つのカテゴリに分けられました：モータースポーツ、人間の顔、抽象的な形、滝、動くメカニズム。
各カテゴリにはさまざまなオブジェクトが含まれています。たとえば、モータースポーツカテゴリには、スノーモービルやオートバイのクリップが含まれていました。
研究チームは、被験者がビデオを見ているときに収集されたEEGデータを分析しました。EEGは各ビデオクリップに対して特定のパターンを表示し、
研究者はビデオの内容をほぼリアルタイムで解釈できることを意味しました。
実験の2番目の段階では、3つのカテゴリがランダムに選択されました。2つのニューラルネットワークがこれらの2つのカテゴリで作成されました。
1つのネットワークは、3つのカテゴリの1つに属するランダムな画像を生成し、ノイズから画像を生成しました。もう1つのネットワークは、EEGスキャンからノイズを生成しました。両方のネットワークのデータを比較し、ランダムに生成された画像をEEGノイズデータに基づいて更新し、生成された画像が被験者が見ている画像に似ているまで繰り返しました。
システムが設計された後、研究者はテスト被験者にまだ見ていない同じカテゴリのビデオを表示し、

をテストしました。
2回目の視聴中に生成されたEEGはネットワークに提供され、ネットワークは90％の確率で正しいカテゴリに画像を配置することができました。
研究者は、実験の結果が驚くべきものであったと述べています。長い間、EEGには画像を再構築するのに十分な情報がないと考えられていました。
ただし、研究チームの結果は、それが可能であることを証明しました。
