In 2007, the United States Department of Defense awarded him the Medal for Exceptional Public Service for his decades of support. In 2014, Charlie and his longtime manager, David Corlew, founded the The Charlie Daniels Journey Home Project. Rather than creating another celebrity charity, the organization raises money for established nonprofits that help veterans with mental health care, employment, family support, and the difficult transition back to civilian life. Charlie died on July 6, 2020, after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke at the age of 83. His mission didn’t end with him. The foundation continued under his family’s and colleagues’ leadership, raising millions of dollars to support veterans and their families. Charlie Daniels never wore the uniform.
