Side chain vs optimium vs anytrust vs Validium.
The five properties of a blockchain confirmation rule are: ledger growth, censorship resistance, DA, reorg resistance, validity. (for more details please read the linked thread). In a modular world each aspect can be supplied with a different network and trust assumption making this complex.
The first two properties together make up liveness and the last three together make up safety. Security = safety + liveness.
Sidechain only borrows Reorg resistance from L1 by making commits to chain. So safety and liveness are both fundamentally dependent on the sidechain validators.
An optimium borrows censorship resistance and reorg resistance from L1 by including a transaction inclusion protocol whereas a sidechain only borrows reorg resistance. It can also borrow ledger growth from L1 if there is a proper sequencer replacement protocol if the sequencer fails or a quorum doesn’t form. But if there is a potentially invalid state claim without DA, no other sequencer will want to put their collateral down on the state claim so if DA fails, ledger growth also fails.
In summary a well designed optimium borrows liveness from L1 and only safety from the DAC - this lets us be very aggressive on the quorum requirement for the DAC (N/N) without sacrificing liveness. An optimium thus designed is safe as long as at least one of N is honest and is live as long as one of N is honest. Therefore the security condition is one of N is honest.
Anytrust (pioneered by @arbitrum) is a further refinement of the optimium by making the observation that safety fails when the N/N quorum in DAC is not safe due to DA failure - so might as well add a fast validity acceptance if the DAC quorum also signs off on validity. Therefore no fraud proof is run if you get the quorum to sign off but if the quorum fails, you switch to rollup mode and run. Thus anytrust is optimium + fast confirmation (and the latter is added on without any cost). Since the anytrust model requires the committee to fully verify the state it requires redundant DA and execution and can’t work with scaled DA (where each node downloads only a little) unlike an optimium.
In a validium, validity is unconditional (cryptographic), DA comes from a quorum (N/N), Reorg and censorship resistance inherited from L1, ledger growth from a sequenced replacement protocol. Thus safety of the bridge comes from L1, liveness comes from the DAC (N/N). So the security of a validium is still based on a N/N assumption (similar to anytrust) but the safety alone is equivalent to L1. The safety being optimal lets different validium chains compose with each other (because bridging transactions are unconditionally safe) without compounding the trust assumptions.
Each of these models have differences and it is worth being precise on the trust assumptions.
