I’ve already noticed it with the ELL student in my practicum class, having extra instruction on reading in the ELL classroom has him opening up in the general classroom as well. His instruction is more individualized causing him to improve overall #JMUREAD #READ366 #W12

Another way I want to promote reading in my class is through helping my students to create a positive self-concept by offering specific praise instead of just a “good job” by calling out specifically what they are doing well it can increase their confidence #READ366 #JMUREAD #W12

In a classroom I observed last year, the third grades did a speed sort. The entire class was able to participate as a practice for their quiz later. The students loved the competition, and it was a fun way to complete a word sort #JMUREAD #READ366 #W11

When using the spelling inventory assessment, I like how the teacher can stop after the student has made 5 mistakes because just like with frustration reading level, it is important that we do not push our students to a point of frustration or disinterest. #JMUREAD #READ366 #W9

In my practicum class, many student are using “pretend reading” for example, one student was reading Curious George by telling the story in her own words while turning the pages. #JMUREAD #READ366 #W6

At my practicum the teacher does a good job of shared reading to introduce to kids the concept of word. He points to the word and has the children mimic him as they read it together. This helps each child scan from left to right and see every sound within the word #Read366 #W6

A method discussed when talking about interventions for older students is giving students more time with books and more time for reading in the classroom. I believe this is one of the strongest methods, because any time spent with a book is beneficial #READ366 #JMUREAD #S5W14

When I think of book clubs I think of suburban stay-at-home mom's reading the Great Gatsby after yoga. I don't think of elementary schoolers discussing Dr. Suess or a magic treehouse book, but it is "one of the best ways to nurture students' love of reading"! #READ366 #S5W12

The section about “knowing when to stop” administering a spelling inventory was very helpful. Some children feel bad about themselves if they do not answer questions correctly and it can cause them to dislike spelling in the future. (Bear et al; 29) #read366 #jmuread #S5W8
