Agriculture is the main source of nutrient pollution in the Wye. A surge in the number of poultry farms along the Wye, since 2016 coincides with an increase in algal blooms & a decrease in fish numbers in the once-pristine river.
Nitrogen & phosphate in chicken poop feeds algae in the water causing it to grow out of control, turning the pure waters of the Wye to a green sludge that smothers light & air, suffocating wildlife. (Picture by Steven Gaythorpe).
