Why don't all states have a state freedom caucus? What's stopping them?
I get asked these questions a lot. Especially from grassroots folks in red states who are spending their time and treasure trying to fight The Swamp in their state capitol. And we desperately want to help them.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of reasons why a particular state doesn't have a freedom caucus. The short answer is that there aren't enough true conservatives in the legislature who are willing to fight the Establishment, fight the Democrats, fight their own Republican colleagues, and fight the media in a constant, sustained fashion - their political careers be damned.
But the longer answer is that a lot of states have institutionalized their legislature. Remember Shawshank Redemption? Warden Norton and Captain Hadley ruled the prison with such an iron fist that the inmates lost all hope. All of us know (of) a person who got elected for the first time, was ready to fight The Swamp, but then they quickly disappointed you. The Swamp does that to freshmen. The fishes. As Red said in the movie,
"These walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to 'em. Enough time passes, you get so you depend on them. That's institutionalized."
It took Brooks fifty years to get institutionalized in Shawshank. It takes just a few months in elected office.
That's what happens to politicians when their ideological moorings aren’t firmly anchored to first principles.
Shawshank Redemption isn't a perfect analogy (there are likely some legit criminals in political office, but they aren't all prisoners). Still, the movie is pretty insightful if you apply it to politics.
If a state is going to be a beacon of freedom, it needs more Andy Dufresne's. Why? Because he had hope. And it was "like he had an invisible coat that would shield him from this place," as Red said.
Men like @chiproytx, @RepAndyBiggsAZ, @RepBobGood, and other members of the @freedomcaucus in Washington are like that. No matter what the Swamp throws at them, you can always count on them to stay true to principles.
The @SFC_Network is trying to find men and women like that at the state level. We already have an all-star team of folks in Georgia, South Carolina, all the way to Arizona, Idaho, and even in the Swamp-infested land of Illinois. We’re in 11 states right now, but the goal is all 50.
If your state doesn’t have lawmakers like this, it’s because the political Nortons and Hadleys have too much power. When they’re in charge, if you show any sign of resistance, punishment is swift and brutal. And then they deploy the emotional terrorism where they make you feel like it’s YOUR fault. You’re the problem. And The Swamp looks the other way while Boggs and the “Sisters” attempt to violate your dignity and pride.
It’s insidious and corrupt.
But the best lawmakers relish the fight. They’ll take the beatings but they just keep on fighting. Like when Dufresne played the opera record on the loudspeaker and then just sat back and listened – even though he knew he was going to get the crap beat out of him later.
Watch Shawshank Redemption again when you get the chance. It’s startling how it operates like a legislature. Or watch Mean Girls. It’s basically the same thing.
State & local government is more important to your daily life than Federal… and it largely goes unnoticed.
Find out who your state legislators are & look at their voting/activity during sessions. It will surprise you.
Kansas needs a #sfcn ASAP.
